Hi all

2 or 3 years ago I went to Juan Dolio with my wife. I stayed at the Colonia Tropical Hotel. I loved everything. Of course the Hotel was not a 5 stars hotel as we understand here in Europe but I didn't need it. The food was Ok at the Capella but anyway I went outside for dinner many times and well i was so happy with everything.

I was planning to come back this year again with my wife and my 3 kids to the hotel and I see it is closed and I read here that Juan Dolio is not the same now.

So my question is about changes, I can go to the Capella with my kids, I know that it's not the same because I dont't like big hotels but I like the beach and evrything. Do you recomend me to come back?

Thanks

I have a question Frank.

There is a beach a few minutes away from Boca Chica where the beach has awesome waves. This beach is packed on Sundays where people can sit down and orders drinks and not bothered by the vendors. The few vendors you see are the "seafood vendor" that sell lambi, pulpo, etc.

What is the name of this beach? It is about five minutes from Boca Chica.

If I'm not mistaken it's called Caribbean Beach

Playa Caribe in spanish or Embassy beach in english. I believe the reason for this is that it used to be popular with people from the American embassy way back in the day. It's still a nice spot.

Juan Dolio has changed in that there is a large amount of construction going on. Hence the Colonial Tropical is now apartments. There are two things for you to consider - where you can stay and what you can do.

As you liked going out for dinner it doesn't seem worth your while staying in an all inclusive and at the same end as the Colonial Tropical there is only Capella left. You could stay in an apartment as Frank was suggesting - Costa del Sol is very nice or if you do not want to pay as much you could stay in Plaza Real or Albatros apart hotel. The last 2 are not as nice as Costa del Sol but significantly cheaper - if money is an issue.

You can still go out to eat - many of the restaurants are still here. There are less bars and gift shops though.

The beach is better than it was 3 years ago - it is absolutely stunning in front of Costa del Sol Capella Metro in fact most of the way to old Juan Dolio.

So - should you come back??? There is less shopping and less bars but Freedom bar is still on the corner by Colonial Tropical and Guilias cafe is still there. Try an apartment for a change - you will feel more like you a re living here. The beach is lovely - but if you want to lie on a sunbed and have some shade the only way to do that is to stay at Costa del Sol or Hemingway - both have apts on the beach. If you stay in another apt you are not allowed to take umbrellas etc on the beach so you will have to lie in full sun.

need more info then just pm me

''Playa Caribe'' is a nice spot , a bay with a small beach , big waves , great for fun . Very popular public beach and occasionally a great spot for live music concerts at night . Often used by big companies for their corporate parties . The ''Embassy Beach'' name comes from the name of the old hotel Embassy located on the right side . Naiboa Resort is located on left side of the bay. On the Playa Caribe beach there was a terrace / restaurant / bar . But recently someone bought the whole area around . Embassy hotel , Playa Caribe Terrace are already demolished . Probably Naiboa is next as they already started from it's roof. So if someone is planning to go there must be aware that it's a construction site right now. Probably a very big development is on the way .

The Naiboa Caribe was the first all inclusive resort that I stayed at in the DR a few years ago. Had a great time there. Went back a couple of more times till it closed down. Back then it was a Barcelo Comfort Hotel. Amenities were basic and the food was just ok, but the nightly show entertainment was excellent. It was also close enough to Santo Domingo for weekend getaways which resulted in a full-house on weekends. We also used the Playa Caribe beach next door during our stays at the Naiboa Caribe.

I shot videos of the hotel and activities while staying at the Naiboa Caribe and converted them to DVD's which will forever remain in my movie library..........

Embassy has been my husband's favorite beach since he was a boy. We drove out there last October and were disappointed to see the restaurant gone. Since we had a child with us, we left. Have you heard anything more about what they're going to be building out there?

Unfortunately there is no info yet on this project . After they demolished the hotel and restaurant , no works are done since that , just a watchman with confused ideas about the future development . There were even speculations that it will be part of IFCA as an Ocean Club , Hotel / Conference Center etc.) but according the IFCA master plan it looks too far from it .

Coral Costa Caribe - good deal?

Steve, reading these forums it seems as though you have quite a bit of info regarding the DR and the Juan Dolio area. We are scheduled for a week at the Coral Costa CAribe for our 37th wedding anniversary - St. Patrick's Day- and some of the posts scare me about the property - any info you can give me on the hotel would be much appreciated. Also, I know the hotel is on the beach - but is it a beach with waves or calm? We like a little of both. Any info would be appreciated - thank you.

Costa Caribe is fine. The beach is lovely and the sea is usually calm. Nice Casino there too and lots of good restaurants around 15 mins away in old Juan Dolio. Make sure you have a day at Aura beach club too - the other side of old Juan Dolio. For your anniversary night you could try el Pescador on the beach in Guayacanes ( a 10 min taxi ride away)

Don?t know about Aura anymore because I?ve been told by several people that the quality of the food and service have deteriorated but there?re quite a few other places that romantic and serve great food.

Aura is still lovely for a day at the beach but they seem to have a bit of a problem with the food. I was there a couple of weeks ago and 'no hay' was the favorite word!! No hay (there isn't) sushi, pizzas, most of the starters, fish, steak etc. But what there was was OK ish. But the cheesecake was frozen and we had to leave it in the sun to defrost first. I went for dinner a few weeks ago and it was the same story. No hay. But the service is still good and if you don't need to eat much then it is a lovely place to spend the day or for cocktails in the evening watching the sun go down.

Perhaps they should consider to only have a bar with small snacks for guests. That's better than the word "no hay"; it sends the message they are going bankrupted and don't care about it!

Thank you so much for the information. We are looking forward to a week at the beach (and a little time in the casino too).

Hi Susan and Welcome to DR1 ! Coral Costa Caribe is a nice resort with a nice beach , the water is calm , there is a coral reef in front , protecting from waves , but if you want some waves you can walk a little further and you can get some on the Juan Dolio's public beach area . You can walk miles ether way on the beach to see around . They've done some renovations recently in the resort . Food is OK (for an all-inclusive resort) and you can always dine out as well outside the resort . Enjoy your anniversary !
