Most folks here on the board do not understand that a peso to a Dominican is the same as a dollar to us expats. My neighbors are folks that won't allow a colmado or any other business to stiff them on one peso.
I hope you’re joking.
My six years old cousin in the DR doesnt accept 5 pesos (“solo billetes tío”), while five euros is a reasonable tip here.

The only extranjero ??

maybe you're the only one being asked to pay !!!
Yes. The only one and a single woman without a boyfriend. Makes me a bit more vulnerable. And, as per the norm, I'm from USA so they think I'm rich when most probably make more than me and they have an entire family in their homes to aide with monies. i have to be tough and need to know all details before i hand out.my much needed money. Anyhow, i found out that others are paying it too so i guess it's ok. I will keep up on what they are doing with the monies.

I base my comment on first-person encounters with adults over many years, not with a spoiled kid.

I will ask the neighbors what they pay. I just can't see what they would do with all that cash. There are around 70 families in our little neighborhood. $7000 a month collected is a lot of cash. I'm always cautious. Im the only extranjero in my neighborhood.
MAYBE with all that extra cash ...they will retire to Casa De Campo ......some nice villas available there

So a salary of let’s say 60.000 Pesos equals $ 60k .
Are you sure the encounters weren’t “close encounters of the third kind”?S

It is not always about the money. $100.00 pesos is nothing to most but all of sudden they want to collect a $100.00 pesos a month. I would ask. Funny my nieces, nephews, even my son, always appreciated whatever you gave them. Glad they were raised that way.

100 is only about $1.80; less than the cost of coffee at MacDonald's in the US.
IMO I do not think the cost (very minimum) was/is the issue. More of why and what is it for. All of the sudden you are asked for "dues", I get the OP's concern. As far as the amount, no not an amount of concern.

As long as everyone else is paying and there's needed work getting done - no problem. It's a bargain. I give 100 pesos to the bag boys in Playero every week.

I don't know what work they need to get done. It's not a building it's a neighborhood. The small park is cared for.by Santo Domingo Este. The gas station and the flour mill cut the grass and trim thetrees. The flour mill even painted the fronts of all the.homes last year for free. The garbage is picked up everyday. When i see them again i will ask what they do with the money.

My bag boys get maybe 10 pesos if I have change which i usually don't. I carry my own bags out of the store and put them in my little cart that i wheel home with my dogs at.my side. They are tied outside of the store Aprezio waiting for me.

Once again, 100 pesos to a Dominican is the same as 100 dollars for you.

It's really a hard concept for non-Dominicans to grasp.

Imagine making 20000 thousand dollars a month, and it barely covers your basic necessities.

Nope a small Premium Roast is $1.00, medium $1.49 and a large is $1.69
Of course here a coffee in an eatery is 200 pesos, and so where is the better deal ?
