La Copa del Mundo Alemania 2006

Here are a few words in Spanish in honor of the World Cup. I am not a regular "f?tbol" (soccer) fan but I do enjoy the World Cup every four years. I am watching the games on Univision and reading what I miss in BBC Mundo.com. Here are common (basic) words:

El arco- the goal
El arquero- the goalie (goalkeeper)
El campeonato- the championship
La cancha- the field
El delantero- (the) forward
El empate- tie
El equipo- the team
El f?tbol- football (soccer)
El gol- goal
El juego- the game
El jugador- player
La pelota/ el bal?n- the ball
El partido- the game (match)
El silbato- the whistle/ or the referee (in some countries)


Empatar- to tie
Derrotar/ vencer- to defeat
Ganar - to win
Perder- to lose

La primera mitad- the first half
La segunda ronda- the second round



I may add some more later on.

Great Chirimoya-

I am just curious is that list from a European website? Some of the terms are interesting and definitely vary and as you know I prefer diversity but if you read a newspaper from Ecuador or Colombia you will see a very different list of vocabulary.


"Offside"- I am not sure. I will have to ask but if I am not mistaken I have heard the English word used. No tengo la menor idea.

offside = fuera de juego

others
subsitute = suplente
goalkeeper = portero (maybe mexican - iberian difference with arquero?)
referee = árbitro

El arquero for goalie comes from América Latina.

El portero which is equally as common I think is closer to being a generic word.

Both-

"Mundial"= adjective

"La Copa del Mundo"= adjectival phrase.

If you check in the newspapers some use both, some stick to one or the other.

Sample usage of phrases-

It's great to have vocabulary and terminology but one also has to know how to use them correctly in a sentence. I provided sample usage of phrases below from today's newspaper as examples:


1) España venció 3-1 a Túnez en Stuttgart y clasificó a la segunda ronda- BBC Mundo

2) Túnez sorprendió a España con un gol a los 8 minutos de juego -BBC Mundo

3) Se puede decir que España ganó el partido con las sustituciones- BBC Mundo

4) España avanzó a la segunda fase del campeonato- BBC Mundo

5) Europa salió victoriosa el lunes, con triunfos de Suiza, Ucrania y España - BBC Mundo

6) Arabia Saudí, por su parte, necesita ganar a España en su último choque para continuar en la competición. - BBC Mundo

7) El partido más interesante aún estaba por venir - BBC Mundo

8) El joven delantero es hasta ahora el goleador del Mundial con tres dianas. -BBC Mundo

1) la segunda fase= la segunda ronda

2) diana= gol

3) el guardameta = goalie ( I like this term- a new one for me)


BTW- if you follow the games on BBC Mundo the coverage is great if you can't see all the games. They provide nice video clips and the articles are great.
