the grass is allways greener?

i've seen a lot of people who like yourself go down to the DR on vacation, and decide that this is where they want to spend the rest of their lives.the majority of them don't last 2 yrs.once the money is gone,then a lot of their dominican freinds start disappearing just as fast.if the US is so bad why are so many dominicans willing to die trying to get there,and don't say just for the money,I know a lot of dominicans who moved back to their country only to come right back to the US,a lot of you are going to look very stupid when all you do is denounce the US only to end up right back there......jim

Hola Maria, my wife, Yris, who as i said is Dominican and certainly a proud Dominican, fully agree's with me as to the violent nature of many Dominicans. I personally have not witnessed any violence but her many cousins have told me many stories of violent acts that never get reported to the police. They are all rather scornful of the abilities of the police force. I think that if you have a little money, and do not mind a slower pace of life the Dominican Republic is the place for you. I wasn't trying to condemn the DR, just pointing out to that the grass is always greener on the other side. If you plan on moving there, do some careful planning and further investigations.

Europeans are a bit cooler than americans on the surface. Once you have become friends, the friendship is much deeper than with americans. French are the hardest to get to.

Americans need to get out of their shell, and learn that the world doesn't stop on the east coast. They should learn more languages, then they can understand a bit more of the world.

Europeans are actually much more true friends when one builds a relationship with them (of course IN GENERAL ....).

One fault that many "americans" (meaning north ...) have is thinking that others should assimilate to them. (please don't do this)

Please apply what Bert is saying to other cultures, not only Europe. Don't put people into one bucket. I think that most of the people on this board are above "average" as far as attempting to learn about other cultures.

Although North Americans are more hesitant than others ...

Basically, it isn't right for any society to impose it's beliefs on another.

Hola Maria,

Como ?tu ?ta ? You got me mixed up with somebody else. I would never say "Dominicanos are violent in nature", ?cause that would be generalizing y eso no se hace. One can say however, that Gente de "La Raza", Latinos, have..... ehhh, sangre caliente, and I mean that in more than one way. It?s the sun. Violent no !! Born in the Lesser Antilles, I proudly consider myself Latino. Raised in the US, living and working (in law enforcement) now in Europe, I can assure you that I have seen human nature at its most creative when hot tempered or mildly provoked. Latinos don?t even come close to the violent nature of some of our European and NorthAfrican neighbors.

As a Latino, all I can say about the pix on your Boriqua homepage : Ehhh...., are u familiar with the term "Hubba, Hubba" ? Mire, todo en broma, nada en serio, eh ?

if it is not the violent nature then it may be be a lack of selfcontrol?!!that's even worse as the excuse "it's the nature" goes missing and this makes them fully guilty and responsable for their actions without excuse.

Dear Big Daddy:
Certainly you must know that violent crimes happen everywhere and not just in D. R., I believe the difference is that it is very hushed and hidden in the U. S. The public will never hear of the abhorrent things that surpass in the U. S. In the U. S. we are only informed about what the government allows us to be informed about.

Hello Jim,

Perhaps you are correct sir, I may return to the U. S. looking stupid, and perhaps I will not. We shall see. I certainly do not mean to bash the U. S. , I just live here and I have thus far only spoken about what my experiences have been. Upon my return from the D. R. I am going to law school. I have no doubt in my mind that this sojourn to the Dominican Republic will be inevitably beneficial in opening my eyes for the better.

violence?how about the 70 year old farmer that has gotten his head chopped of a few month ago.how about the fare collector of the expresso that was killed by a passenger only because the bus stopped on the way to take up another passenger?
what about the vandalism and riots on huelga general?about vandalism in general?
things do go a lot deeper than they appear on the surface and it's not only warm and friendly smiles.you will learn when you get here.everybody had to learn his lessons and so will you.

Sometimes discussions get heated up in this forum and emotions start flyin?. Tu vez, just goes to prove that the sun is to blame. Gringos ;-), expats, Dominicanos, Latinas, on this forum (I reckon) we want the best for the DR. Let?s try to keep our tempers in check and not diss each other (too much)
