Typical cost

What is typical total cost for school uniforms, shoes and supplies for the start of a school year? Is there a standardized list?

My wife's son is going to a mid-range private college. This is what I have paid for his school supplies (libros y ?tiles escolares) over the past four years:

Year.........Pesos.......Grade
2012.........12,065.......Primero de Media
2013.........16,325.......Secundo de Media
2014.........15,795.......Tercera de Media
2015.........11,185.......Quarto de Media

No doubt many parents buy used books to save money so the college adds this comment to their list each year: "Si usted como tutor(a) compra el libro usado, el mismo no puede estar lleno (ejercicios)". In other words the exercise pages within textbooks have to be blank.

We use the government textbooks for all subjects except English and French. We don't charge for them, only the non-government textbooks.

If you are helping out a family I would say 2000 pesos for a young child would more than adequate, and for a teenager going to high-school you might need to up it another 500 to 2500 pesos. That is if they are getting completely new outfits.

Thanks Bob. I think I'll be on the hook for two kids, 10 and 12. Bringing down two backpacks and some other supplies. Composition books are two for a buck now, and I also got 20 carpenter pencils, which seem to last forever.

If you go to Calle de Sol in Santiago, one of the side streets, Duarte has numerous stores like Tienda Alberto and Casa Michel that sell school supplies, uniforms...etc. You can currently get 200 page note books at Casa Michel for 30 pesos. I think they have polo shirts for 200 pesos. Take the kids with you and have fun shopping. Hordes of other shops as well.

I'll be in Hig?ey, but thanks. Her family is hosting me and I'm trying to get a charity off the ground.
