Are there any nice resorts or hotels in Las Galeras? Is there enough to do there to stay or week or just a few days?

There are two that my wife and I have stayed at and can recommend. Club Bonito and Todo Blanco. They are side by side, and you should check them both out when you get there. Todo Blanco has no pool, but you can use the Club Bonito one...

Speaking for ourselves, there is not enough to do there to spend an entire week. Having said that, though, we have made the trip there twice because it is just so beautiful. We recommend renting a boat to take you to some of the more remote beaches, and if you have a car and a local to guide you, there are some wild places to go see (there is one place with a great stone arch through which ocean water flows into a small lagoon type area that you can snorkel in...it is amazing!)

Great place, very quiet, not much to do other than relax...then again maybe we missed something!

GINGER Re: Las Galeras

Hi, Ginger, Marc described Las Galeras and the two resorts he mentioned - they, as well as the tiny village of Las Galeras, are wonderful - right on the beach. If you will e-mail me, I'll be glad to give you more details about the village, some accomodations with websites to look at and specific people at those accomodations to contact - and also tell you about the beauty of the place. If you want especially to go to Las Galeras, I hope you will fly into Puerto Plata airport (northern shore). You'll still have a long journey from Puerto Plata to Las Galeras, but worth every minute and worth every small buck to get there. Feel free to contact me! -Mame-

Ginger,

Check out the Las Galeras Visitor's Guide on Samana.Net. The Attractions section highlights area attractions and things to do when visiting each. Also local hotels are listed under the Accommodations section. The website contains much information about the entire Samana Peninsula.

Andy, I'm about ready to send lots of info to Ginger - and guess who I'm going to mention - and where (LOL!!) When people ask for information in messages, it would help if they tell when they plan to go, and what area they plan to go to (at least first). Like Ed and I, we didn't realize, by looking at the DR map, that it's a much bigger country than the map makes it look!
and it has a number of different kinds of environments - and things to do, or not do. Another thing we found important regarding information is the traveler's age - and whether they want to rest and relax, or "party." You can understand how those two factors can be/are important - we sure do!
Catch you later, friend. -Ed and Mame-

Ginger, last year I stayed for a week at the Casa Marina resort in Las Galeras with my children and we absolutely loved it. The resort has all kinds of activities for children and grown-ups that will keep you busy all day, including aquatic aerobics, table games, volleyball, darts, etc. At night, there's an after dinner show which is very entertaining, after that you can go to the disco, play pool, etc. Outside of the resort there's really not much to see, but if you're adventurous and you want to venture away from the hotel, you're in for a big surprise. The Bay of Samana is one of the most beautiful places in the world, try to visit Playa Rincon, where a river so clear it looks like a pool flows into the sea and you can enjoy both at the same time. You can go to the El Limon waterfall, Cayo Levantado, or Playa del Valle, these are all at least a half day trip and there's tours to all of these places. Hope you have fun!!!

TO MARILYN Re: Las Galeras

Hi Marilyn ! Was glad to see your message to Ginger about Las Galeras. We didn't get to see the resort you stayed at - but we think we know where it is. Is it way down the beach, around a left corner, way out on the most visible little peninsula? From the beach at Las Galeras we saw a big, beautiful place, but didn't get out there. Please let me know, as we plan to go to Las Galeras again - during the winter, this time! Also want to mention that the man who takes people out in the boat is at the little restaurant on the beach, at the very beach-end of the Main Street and he has a beautiful gold tooth (as well as he is beautiful!). We didn't get to do that either - circumstances prevented us - but certainly will take that ride to Rincon next time! Missed the waterfall, too! but didn't know about that until just today. So, you can see, we did a lot of eating and resting! I do want to mention we spent our first week at
el Marinique, with Andy and Nicole, owners, operators of their superb beach restaurant/terrace and their little cabanas. Can't think of a more beautiful place than that!! Seriously, next time, go see them and you'll be delighted!!! Glad to see your input. -Mame-

Re: TO MARILYN Re: Las Galeras

Thanks Mame, I'm certainly planning another trip to Las Galeras in August and I'll make sure I visit Andy and Nicole's place (is he the one from Samana.net? Since I'm Dominican I didn't go on any tours, I went with relatives that knew the Samana peninsula pretty well and they took me everywhere. I loved the hike to El Limon waterfall, we did it with locals that we hired ourselves and saved plenty of US$!!! every day we visited a new place (we were there for 5 days) and I was just awed with the beauty of it all. Samana is one of the more beautiful places in DR but you have to get out of the resorts and travel because there are so many places to see. To those with children I'd recommend a resort because sometimes, like my kids, they want to stay in the pool and have fun, so we just left them and went on our little adventures, but if you have no kids and you want to explore, an all-inclusive resort is not the answer, a bed and breakfast is a better choice.

Re: Las Galeras:playa Rincon

I've been overland to Playa Rincon on dirt bike. Take your time and be careful. The beach is very nice and sparsely populated. There are fish shacks at either end. I wouldn't try it with a 4-wheel drive unless you are experienced in driving it over rough terrain. Maybe you can get there by private boat.

Re: Las Galeras:playa Rincon

The worse part of the road is from the village of Rincon down the mountain to the beach - about a mile. Although the road can be difficult especially after a hard rain, it can usually be navigated with a regular 2 wheel-drive vehicle with some road clearance. I've never had to switch my Cherokee into low range or 4-wd using the road. Plenty of times I have seen big tour busses make the trip. Just drive carefully.

Boats for the 15 minute trip to Playa Rincon leave the main beach of Las Galeras starting about 9am and shuttle back and forth all day during the season. In off season, arrangements can be made with one of the captains hanging around on the beach. Going by boat is the best way to get there as the ride and scenery is well worth it. For more information see the Attraction's section (Playa Rincon) or the Visitor's Guide section (Las Galeras) of Samana.Net.
