JOHN

I think that what you are considering naysayers should be read again. Perhaps you should read when you're awake. ;) There are two things being said here by people in business

1. You're 'young' in working in this culture. Take it easy before you make good or bad judgements about the people working for/with you. Like all of us, you will learn your lessons, both good and bad. We all pay school fees in new ventures and you will too. It is inevitable. So, we're saying, let some time go by.

2. You can say anything you want, but when you prove out longer term viability, then is when we pay attention.

Do believe me, I've seen businesses here that should not work, work well, and business that should fly, crash. After almost four years of living here, focusing on international customers or businesses, this is the first year that we have Dominican Republic customers in both of our businesses, and I think I regret that decision daily. ;)

No-one is discouraging you, what people and I are saying, is - be cautious, and let some time go by before you tell us how good it is. In the meantime, I think many, including myself, will be interested in simply how it is. If your experience is that Dominican employees start strong, that's nice, and actually, we do know that. Talk to us after four or five months when the excitement is over, work has to be done and there is a little more of a track record. I will certainly be interested in your experiences over the next year.

Its a tough market hope you have a DIFFERENT plan, there are xy and z pitfalls, but good luck!

Some subjects are discussed best while relaxing in the living room. But I prefer to discuss business in the kitchen.

I don't see you attacking (nor disputing) the message, only the messengers.

I guess the bottom line is that until you can convey how you expect to be a sucessful absentee business owner in the DR, to those that have put in alot of effort to run businesses here, everyone is going to be skeptical.

Only the best!

John,

I wish you only the best. I understand what you are partaking in and I support you.

I have been in business with Dominicans although they are not barrio people we do have folks from the barrio working there.

For those of you that are in the Sosua area and are interested in seeing this business run by Dominicans and successful for almost 4 years. PM me and I will tell you about it.

Once again best wishes!

Read these posts my friend. Many of the posters here are established beyond your imagination. read what they are trying to "tell you". The way and manner in which you wish to partake in this purchase is "financial suicide".

Many people here have established themself over a period of many years! I myself have been investing in the DR since 1998 and have lived there since 1995. I have family here on my mother's side of the bloodline from Moca/ Jamao del Norte area. Even with these factors I still had to take into consideration that I am American born with a stubborn/narrow minded, Irish/American father who forbidded Spanish to be spoken in the house. I had a lot to learn, alot!

Although I have invested mostly in New York I have been in a learning process over a period of 10 years here in the DR. I have aligned myself with serious Dominican businessmen with their "own money". I have Dominican lawyers who understand the laws here! I am still learning and will continue to do so.

What inspires you to go into business in a country you do not understand???

It is a completely different animal, nothing you are used to seeing anywhere in the states or Europe.

What else can be written here? Nothing that I know of... Read the posts!

I guess your answer to this poster is different because he doesn't have big bucks to blow????

of some kind that you are partaking in. Yeh your right, the next time someone tells me to plaster my desk with warnings, when I said in my first post it was not necessary, I'll tell them the real part of the anotomy that they should put it in.

If it offends you that you work so hard , and there is a chance my biz might be sucessful without my day to day presence, well, I cant help you.
Why not sit back and relax and when its the proper time, as I said in my first post, I'll give you an update (just as I promised) In the meantime, don't count my money, be patient for me to fail, and concentrate on your business so that it will thrive. OK-fair enough? Let ME worry about my businesses and or follies. Remember its my money Im losing -not CC's ATZ, or yours. Mine.

"trying To Teach A Pig To Sing"

Hello John,
As you can see, I don't respond here very often. However I am afraid I will
have to jump in Your corner. I am honered to have known you in your previous business life. Your have worked hard, smart, and most of all with heart. A trait most can only hope for. Keep doing what you always done! Are
You crazy? Maybe a little, for trying to share your idea. My friend, you have
accomplished more on a "bad" day than most would on a good one! With Style. As for me, I am still one of those "misserable" Americans working to much, and hating life in So Cal wih my beautiful Dominican wife of ten years. I thank God every day.I leave soon for three weeks to be with my 1000+
extended family in the D.R.(Lazy ,useless, poor, dishonest barrio people) on my
2 acre piece of dirt (and growing)in Punta Cana.

Merry Christmas
Winston Strickland

JOHNE

johne, I truly have no idea why you posted on here initially. You know what you're doing, you don't want to hear anything else, you will say what you want to say when you say it, and you do not want any feedback. Perhaps a press release would be the better way to go. Here, we actually talk a little.

Chris--I think this post can be answered in part by you re- reading my OP. I was clear in stating that I was embarking on a teeny weenie idea I had in the back of my pea sized brain. I stated that I would prefer if you did not give warnings and advise as I was familiar with the pitfalls of doing business or love in the DR. I was clear that I would post more information and give a progress report when I had more information.

I requested several things in the OP and maybe you're right it was more like a press release. And yet, even after stating please don't... bla bla bla..that was not good enough for some people that would like to show the whole world how much they know about the DR. Some went even so far as to suggest they knew my net worth. Some thought they knew me so well that I was a brainless kid riding on a bike down the middle of...bla. bla, bla. Some went as far as confirming I was a lunatic which I had already stated in the OP.(no need to do it twice) Then there were those that know how to read and did the "right thing" including my friend Winn Strickland who has knowm my lunacy for 20 years but responded with class.
So Chris, perhaps this response has helped you a wee bit in trying to understand why I put that post out there to be flogged in public.I certaunley at this point dont know why. Quite honestly, after reading Winston's post where he said the only mistake I made was sharing this idea, did it occur to me I would get the reaction from board members that I did.I really wonder sometimes would they say these thing at a cocktail party, a luncheon, or do they only feel comfortable saying nothing, lending nothing of substance and they let their keyboard do the talking. I really don't know.I mean it.

fo?rums, also fo?ra (f?r, fr)

A public meeting place for open discussion.
A medium of open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper or a radio or television program.
A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation.
A court of law; a tribunal.
Maybe you should post to a blog rather than a forum. That is more appropriate for a one-sided discussion.
