President Luis Abinader threw the first ball to inaugurate the 2020-2021 Dominican Professional Baseball Championship on Sunday, 15 November. The Licey Tigers won the game against the Escogido Lions (8-3) at the Quisqueya Ball Park in Santo Domingo. A Dominican President hadn’t done so since 1978, when the late President Antonio Guzmán did the honors.
Vice President Raquel Peña did the same in Santiago, for the opening game between the Gigantes del Cibao and the Aguilas Cibaeñas. The Gigantes won 8-5.
The Estrellas Orientales vs. Toros del Este game that would have opened the season in La Romana was suspended due to heavy rains.
The games are televised and streamed on the Internet. Fans are not yet allowed to be present at the stadiums.
