National District Mayor Carolina Mejía was out on Thursday, 20 August 2020 supervising the new lighting system installed on Av. Winston Churchill, in the “downtown” of Santo Domingo. “With this we can guarantee people can go out walking and feel safe,” the Mayor commented on the installation. Surveillance cameras are adding to the security. The Mayor observed that people will be able to walk at night [when there is no curfew].

Av. Winston Churchill is very nice. I am a regular there both directions from 27th de Febrero. Both directions are nice. Pre COVID-19 my favorite cine was in Blue Mall. It is like sitting in your living watching a movie with top of the line snacks and beverages. Many nice places to eat in there if you want to make it a dinner and a movie.

I always drove to every destination so I never really noticed the light situation. Still not sure if I would want to hoof it from place to place. And I am sure my date would not want to do it her heels. :ROFLMAO:

Caribbean Cinemas is a whole other subject we could discuss here. I was a VIP movie guy every weekend before the plague shut things down. Gotta support Bob!

The cine in Blue Mall is nice but the cine in Downtown Center is heaven on earth. Its few cines in the states that rival it.

My favorite as well.

I started with Malecon Center VIP where I was usually the only person for the matinees. It was definitely disappointing when they closed down.

After that it was Acropolis (no VIP) there it was Blue Mall VIP, then Silver Sun, Agora a few times, and finally Downtown Center.

Matinee VIP are almost always empty.

I saw your comments on Cinemas and was just about to mention the Malecon one and the VIP area where you went up with an elevator. I liked an outing to there and would eat ribs at Tony Romas first. I like Acropolis to. Never tried Blue Mall but Bella Vista Mall as I lived right next to. You should try NovoCentro. They show different movies. The kind of “boring” latin american/Euro movies. A little different. At least they used to. In recent years mostly been at Downtown Center and would eat at Wendys in food court.

Yup, the Tony Romas at Malecon Center was a favorite. It's so sad what's happened to that place.

When Blue Mall opened they had about 20 different fast food places with all kinds of variety. Even a candy shop. After their first year contract was up they started dropping like flies until only Wendy's and a shushi place was left. I think those are gone too.

Acropolis had around 10-15 fast food places when they opened that suffered the same fate.

Diamond Mall had 8-10 until the explosion. I have no idea what food places they have.

I've been to Novo Centro many times. Also Bella Vista maybe 20 times. Plaza Central 5-6 times. Sambil around 10 times and Galeria 360 with the 4X bouncing action seats a bunch of times as well. Diamond Mall probably 15 times.

Your description is pre covid ? What do you mean with the explosion ? It will be bad now. I never liked Blue Mall. Went there just a few times and hated the parking and it seemed sort of fake with shops and restaurants.

Definitely pre Covid.

Diamond Mall suffered an explosion back in 2006 when a pizza shop employee left the gas oven valve on and came in the next morning and lit a match. It pretty much wiped out the entire interior of the mall. With that and all the new malls that were being built it never recovered. It's still open but a shell of what it used to be.
I know what you mean about Blue Mall. So many shops that are owned by bored wives of affluent Dominicans just so they can brag about having a store.
It's almost eerie to walk through a lot of malls here with open shops but nobody actually shopping.

Yeah I've always wondered how Blue Mall survives when the majority of the populace can't afford anything in there. I make great money and its things in there that I can't afford.

I left the capital a month ago so I can’t tell you. Winston Churchill Avenue is very impressive now and modern. Kind of the Brickell Avenue of Santo Domingo.

Thank you, but I am very well aware to some of the changes upon Av. Winston Churchill.
I am specifically interested in the new lighting concept, as it is supposed to be utilized throughout municipalities nation wide.

I saw on Instagram the mayor Carolina Mejia walking elegantly dressed down Churchill surrounded by her entourage talking about the plans for the lighting of the city.

The plans for these lighting systems on Av. Winston Churchill, and nationwide did not begin under Carolina Mejia.
They have been on the table for a while.
