pi2,
Better yet, fly that kite during a thunder storm on the end of a copper wire. Hold kite wire in one hand, place other hand on invertor. Bet you can't beat that price for electricity.

The google ad for www.sunlec.com is showing solar panels as low as 78 cents a watt.

Another factor in the cost of living is hobbies. eco-friendly hobbies such as kite flying and building are becoming popular.
Kite festivals can atttract large crowds.

KiteBuilder.Com - Your source for kite building plans, kites, information, and kite making supplies

Birdwatching :

Where do you want to go birding in Dominican Republic today?

20 + species are visible in gardens.

Snorkeling is also not a great contributor to the cost of living.

Punta Cana Snorkeling - Punta Cana Reef

The extensive range of free or nearly free activities available all year round in the DR certainly contribute to the low cost of living.

No commercial connnection with any of these links.

Should have guessed, why does this not surprise me....

Seems we have at least 3 UFOs on this thread; working to distruct our planet and prevent conversation on the topic.

Yes its a good hobby identifying UFOS - actually I suspect that many readers are interested in attractive green frieindly lifestyles that preserve the panet for future generations.

But one must reluctantly accept there will always be a Hitler, Thatcher, Stalin, Bush etc. preventing progress.

Go with the rising tide of green thinking.....

"pi2Yanadu"Please phone home"!
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

Phoning home would be impossible for those such as CC from distant planets.
Wait with a telecope for a meteor and maybe the message capsule can hitch a ride...

We are in luck ..... most civilized people want to save the planet for future generations by adopting an eco-responsible lifestyle.

Fortunately this is easy to do in the DR.

Yes I know there could be trailer trash out there - real and potential....

Yes, that's why solar rice cookers are such a hot item amongst Dominicans.

i am afraid the Indians are ahead on this one. I bought one of the indian models 2 years ago mostly it is very good.

Now of course it is very big business - and here is one of the latest designs.

http://www.ctechlab.com/SolarcookerPosterColourPDF.pdf

My model automatically uses electric to supplement solar if it overcast. Do you not think it would be great if universities in the DR or others came up with a model that used lpg , propane etc. to supplement when the sun goes in, or a chemical such as sodium thiosulphate etc. to store the suns energy.

They could save a bomb on expensive gas imports.

Glad to see you are with me on this topic - the ghosts would be pleased.....

They would be pleased most.

(...) the ghosts would be pleased.....

Talk to government 'functionarios' and tell them how much they could pocket in commission if they introduced solar cookers.*
Chances are good, other stupid things were procured by them... (Have you heard again about the electronic blackboards, Harley- Davidson motorcycles, breathalyzers, radar guns...)

*)
Mind you, their profits on gas imports are huge... ;)

It says that it's a "Cum Oven".
Thought that was "something" entirely different!
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
"Solar Cookers" would not be a good idea for the DR government, they get too much "income" from taxing "FUEL imports!

Oh! for sure. US criminals running companies such as GE, Exxon etc. etc. want to sell stupid unnecessary products to poor developing country peoples.

Gringos in such countries can show the way by demonstrating fuel free renewable technologies.

US criminals have been charging stupid prices for years for solar - raw material basically sand - but now the Chinese have halved prices and will halve them again shortly.

Gringos in the DR can lend their support by demonstrating and using these technolgies. Contributing to a greener planet and achieving reduced cost of living......
