Hello, Im wondering if anyone is privy to gambling laws in DR. For example, lets say i wanted to open up a bar/restaurant around Puerto Plata and decided to get a few blackjack and crap tables ect... Would that be illegal? If so, is there a way to obtain a gaming liscense? What kind of penalties (jail time?) would go along with run a gambling spot? Thx

Gambling is a regulated form of entertainment. It takes big bucks to open a casino in the DR, both licensing costs and payoffs to regulators. The operation is also highly taxed. On top of that you have to contend with competition trying to put you under. Gambling in the DR is not for the meek or timid. You probably have to make a Dominican an operating partner. That said there are always casinos listed for sale with brokers on the internet who specialize in casino sales. Do you have 10 or 20 million dollars to invest?

LOL, I dont have access to THAT much money but if the right situation pops up, I'd be able to come up with 2-3 million from an investor I've been working with. My goal isnt to start a huge casino, just a local place that provides poker games and some blackjack ect...

I figured it would make sense since I could employ a few locals and bring more money into the economy. I already know some people that live in DR and would be willing to move forward if I can ever get the ball rolling. Is there anyone I can contact who knows more about this issue.

The one thing I haven't seen is a sportsbook and thats where my specialty is. I work with some associates in London who run sportsbook.com and I see a GREAT opportunity to open up an online sportsbook in DR. It would employ hundereds of people and would generate hundreds of millions of dollars over the first couple of years. Other legal sportsbook gross out at over 1-2 billion dollars a year.

Im surprised DR hasnt seen an opportunity here. I would be ready to make a big investment if I can put a realistic plan forward but I need to know what departement I need to get in contact with. The country would benefit greatly from it. Any help??

The DR has plenty of online sports books.
People have been running sports books, phone and internet based for along time here. They used to get busted all the time.
I hear the Jaragua Hotel sports book is for sale.

The DR has been involved in online casinos for years.
Party Poker was invented by a DR based company.

You better have VERY deep pockets if you want to get into the "legal" gambling business here. Casinos, tables etc. Remember, this is a very unregulated country with lots of regulations.

Your not doing anything that's hasn't been done or actually happening here as I type this.

In Puerto Plata ther are probably only 40-50 sportsbook outlets. In Munoz, a little village up in the hills there are 2. You probably don't realize what a Dominican Sportsbook looks like. Usually it's just a little booth with a computer terminal. They take bets on most major sports including Football (both American and Soccer), Baseball (probably the largest sports gambling in the DR), Basketball, etc. If you want, I will be happy to negociate the sale of one of these booths to you for a couple million less my 10% commission. Please be sure the funds are certified in US dollars please.

Hello,...privy .....and crap ...

All this talk makes me want to go to the bathroom.

Yes with a Merengue Sport on every corner plus countless others you can place a sports bet, and not just parlays, about every 100 yards, so this would be a great idea to compete with that.

Methinks this is someone who hasn't been, yet like many others wants to move/invest/go into business in a strange land with strange rules and customs.

Does anybody know how the new casino on the east end Cabarete is progressing?

I've heard that it will be finished in October or November. It looks beautiful from the outside. It also appears as if a condo resort is being build on the other side of the road on the beach.

I saw the inside of it last week, it looks great. They should be open some time in late October or November.

I thought you need a hotel adjacent to the casino in order to get a license, anyone know how they got around it?
