I went by Long Beach today also, to see if I could find anyone who knew of anyone who had been rehoused in a barrio prepared for the Long Beach residents. No luck! Got some novel responses to my questions though, regrettably most of them unprintable.......;)

And although everything on the sea front side of Long Beach has been razed to the ground, NOT everything on the whole block has been. If you go round the corner into Hermanas Mirabal street, just past where the Massage Centre used to be, the house numbered 56 is still standing. It is a concrete structure, is inhabited & even has a car in the side entrance yard. The restaurant next door is still standing as well. Apart from these 2 buildings there are some lean-to structures at the Crystal end of the block - these only cover vehicles.

I was unable to locate anyone who has received any compensation from a business demolished either. Maybe next week..............?

That's a bit of a simplistic view of the Long Beach situation. There are very real questions about title and whether they were nothing but squatters. Having said that I have real empathy on a human level for the people involved and the way this was handled. look at the whole picture before making such a quick judgement.

A bit more info. on Long Beach - today's El Faro is reporting that the owners (Don Luis' heirs) are complaining about how Tourism handled this.......http://www.periodicoelfaro.com.do/1213/herederos.html.........just when we were thinking that the owners may have operated in conjunction with Tourism.

That would of course assume that the owners are telling the truth!

Indeed. I'd still like to know how many owners there are........could be there are 2 sets and one worked in conjunction with Tourism and the other didn't. Or maybe only one set of owners and part of the family worked in conjunction with Tourism and the other part didn't..... We may never know, of course.

Who cares? The crap is gone and its move-on time.

I should think the people who have been made homeless and jobless for a start! The majority of people agree that the change was needed, its the way it was dealt with that people are angry about.
