If the OP's family member is looking for something good and cheap, my opinion is she can't go wrong with a Mira.

The Daihatsu Mira is the latest version of the Sirion. I bought a Sirion new in 2000 and had zero problems with it. Only maint. and oil changes.
I took good care of it, and it still looked like new when I sold it with a folder of maint. receipts.

Thanks all for your help with this. I was originally hoping somebody on here might have a good car to sell, but as I suspected, nobody has come forward. I decided that rather than trail around the dealers all over the country, I would call Mike Logan and he is now on the case. I found I still have his name in my phone contacts under "Gorgon Mike"!
A Daihatsu Mira? I've always had my doubts about three cylinder cars. I had a bad experience with a five cylinder Colorado, so I am biased against cars with an odd number of cylinders.

You owe it to yourself and your friend to test-drive one. Daihatsu has been making those engines for decades and have them figured out. The A/C in my Sirion was nothing to laugh at either.

Might be but the 5 Cylinder Volvo engine is one of the best ever seen.

In the US you can at least pull up any legit body shop reports. But sure there are nefarious mechanics there also but nothing like the outright attempts to put lipstick on pigs that's done here.

I bet 40% of cars in DR have had their instrument panel mileage rolled back or the check engine lights cross-wired to light up from another 'key-on' source, because I found that exact thing in a car my ex bought.

Rolling back an odometer in the US is quite rare.
There's no doubt that many of the mechanics here are nothing but backyard wrench turners pretending to be professionals. In many ways, mechanics are like doctors here: Using one that is not highly recommended, you're just rolling the dice.

You are rolling the dice with mechanics and doctors

I rented Kia Picantos for many winters. Cheap on gas and tough as nails. I drove them down rough backroads to get to remote beaches. Took them places I wouldn’t take an AWD SUV. Don’t expect blazing acceleration but they get around adequately. Budget sells off their cars annually. I think they ship them to Santo Domingo for disposal.

If you want a good, economical, used car, but a Toyota or a Honda. I've had good luck with almost all the used cars I've ever bought. You have to know how to check one out though.
That is where Mike Logan earns his $250....he has the tools and knowledge to check the car and check it properly.

It's normal to drive a vehicle here without doing anything more than putting gas in it until it stops running. That's why Toyotas are so popular.

And that's the reason you don't want to buy a car owned and used in the DR - the maintenance is non-existent

It behooves me how anyone can run a car without ever changing the oil. Lack of education, or just too lazy and cheap.............

Thanks for that, but the price is over our budget. Also, I would wonder about the availability of parts for a 2008 BMW. Nice to know the engine starts and stops though! ;)
