Looking for Eye Doctor - Optometrist

I'm looking for an eye doctor. My vision is getting worse and I need a prescription and new pair of glasses. I assume it would be easier to find someone in Higuey than in Bavaro. Anyone have suggestions, or know of someone? Either in Bavaro or Higuey.

Well, Hillbilly, I agree to not play with sudo-doctors (there are a lot of them here). And yes, I do want a good one that knows what they are doing. I was lucky enough to find an excellent dentist / orthodontist in Moca. That's pretty "country". I also have heard less than positive stories about doctors in Santo Domingo. I dont think it's where they practice, I think it boils down to ethics and experience.

I'm totally open to seeing an eye doctor in Santo Domingo. Know of any?

I wish. Santiago, yes. Drs Asilis and Drs Guzman are both very good.

Well, I live in Punta Cana now (actually Bavaro). And I'm not willing to make the trip to Santiago for an eye exam. I'm sure someone knows someone in Punta Cana, Higuey, or Bavaro. Worse case scenario, I go to Santo Domingo (I got a place to stay and its' pretty easy to get to), flip a coin, and get an exam from one of the hundreds of places there.

It would just be nice to get a referral from someone who has had a positive experience first, than to just leave my eyes to chance. But what you gonna do?

Anyways, thanks for the advise. Currently I'm nearsighted and have presbyopia. With glasses, I can see things at a distance perfect, but cant read if my life depended on it. I've been told I'm lucky, because without glasses, I can read perfectly. If I was to get surgery, I would no longer need glasses or contacts for distance, but I would "always" need them to read.

The way it is now, I have two choices and they both work good for me. I can wear glasses then just look underneath them, or remove them completely to read. The other option I have is to wear a contact lens in only one eye. So I switch eyes depending on whether I'm reading or viewing at a distance. Both work pretty good for me.

I just need someone to give me a new spherical power as well as PD. Or course a full eye exam would be nice while I'm at it

Its amazing how hard it is to find something as simple as a reputable eye doctor on the East Coast or in Santo Domingo. Next week I'll be in the capital. If I dont hear anything by then, I guess I'll just flip a coin and take my chances.

I can't help you with an eye doctor, but wanted to tell you that I also had myopia since childhood. I could see up close perfectly. I wore contacts for years, and the doc had me try monovision - left eye for close, right eye for distance. Your brain compensates amazingly. I developed cataracts early [in my 40s] and had the surgery and lens implants, and he did the monovision again. Today I only wear glasses to drive - and that's because my left eye [oncoming traffic!!] is my reading eye and I just feel more comfortable with glasses driving [the right eye has plain glass lens]. If I had to do it again I'd be sure the left eye was the distance eye, just because of the driving, something to consider if you ever do that. I can read anything very well without glasses.

Jaja I'm sure their visual and dentist service is top notch. But in Cap Cana, I bet their prices are too! However, thanks for the info. I already wrote them. I have no doubt about their services, but it will be interesting to compare their prices with that of Doctors in Moca. Who knows? I just might get lucky. Thanks!

Thanks for the correction, spelling was never my strong point!. Dr. Gomez's office was on Socorro Sanchez until about 3 months ago. now he has moved 1 block east. and about a block off Bolivar.
