We're trying to book a trip in March to come to Puerta Plata from Florida with a large group. It seems the best flights are out of Ft. Lauderdale/Miami airport. I'm a little South of Tampa. However, I can't seem to find anyone that has a direct flight out of either Santo Domingo or Punta Cana to Puerta Plata/Santiago once we get there & to drive it would be ridiculous. Any suggestions? All would be very much appreciated. Also, who's the best/cheapest airline direct from Florida to fly? Thanks!!

A/A has a daily direct flight from MIA to POP. If you're trying to flying into SDQ or PUJ to save money, it won't work with the additional flight. There is one scheduled flight that I know of from PUJ to POP. It's $149 each way.

A/A flies direct from MIA into POP, STI, SDQ, and PUJ

A/A is running a special from Jan 18 to March 1st...I checked a few dates in there and got a r/t MIA-POP for $355 including all taxes and fees.

Spirit often has crazy specials from FLL to PUJ or SDQ...from $8 each way! works out well under $200 with taxes/fees *but* if it's just for a weekend, and you really want the north coast, it's probably not worth it... if you stay longer and can get a great rate, fly into SDQ and take the Caribe Tours or Metro Bus to Puerto Plata or Caribe to Sosua...it's less than $10, very comfortable, and takes between 4 and 4 1/2 hours, depending on your final stop.

Internal flights are scarce. those that can afford them have their own planes or choppers.

SO: if your group is less than 19 but more than 14, call Lynx Air International at the Ft Lauderdale Executive Airport.

See, the DR is not a tiny island. It is the size of West Virginia (Yeah, I know, not THAT big), but most movement is from "inland towards Santo Domingo or visa versa.

However, if both Punta Cana and PuertO PlatA are on your itinerary, you could also look at a charter bus for the 7-8 hour trip by land. Which I see, they are not.

SOOO......the solution is easy. Fly into Santiago. It is close to Puerto Plata and transportation for large groups are a piece of cake.

We're going to Puerto Plata around 03/15 - 03/24 or so. I've seen the Spirit $6 & 9 specials but only goes into Punta Cana or Santo domingo. Did not realize the towns were only 4 1/2 hrs away by bus from Puerto Plata. So if they run another one of those plus bus fare may not work out too bad. I was told 8 hrs plus due to DR's terrain/roads not being too good. I'll keep my eyes out on both. Thank you so much!!! I've never been to DR so I really appreciate whatever info I can get from ones who have been there. Keep it coming.

I live here on this beautiful island and use bus for travel all over...most major highways are very good...and no bus trip I know of is 8 hrs....I go from Santo Domingo to Sosua a lot, about 4 hours plus....and from SD to Samana, about the same...I have a pilot friend that flys the island about every day,it is $380. an hour...most flights are less than an hour, and if 3 are flying,it is reasonable....with a large group, use Caribe tours bus or Metro...both are large air conditioned,tv and very nice...
250 pesos fron SD to Sosua...about 8 or 9 dollars....and the leave about every hour all day long...

The 8 hour bus ride was probably referring to Punta Cana to Puerto Plata/Sosua...

I've taken the Caribe Tours bus many times...it's a notch or two above Greyhound, and the scenery for a good part of the drive is awesome.
