Lost marriage Certificate

Hi all,

I was married in dominican republic in 1997, however the marriage effectively ended 4 years ago but we have lost the marriage Certificate, and so, we cannot get a divorce without one.
My wife and I are are both English and as we did not register the marriage back in England we can only get a copy from the Dominican Republic.
My understanding is that an attourny will have to collect one in person. and although I have written and telephoned several Lawers there I never get a reply.

Can anyone help?

It doesn't have to be an attorney I don't think. If you let us know where you were married then maybe someone can do it for you and post it to you.

Hello Matilda, thanks for the reply. We were married in Carribean Village, Luperon. But I believe the local Judge who performed the ceromony was from the court at Puto plata. (I say I believe he was from puto plata as I have been told there is not a court in Luperon, not sure this is true or not? )

Actually, there are two "originals": one at the Oficialia where the marriage is registered, and another at the Junta Central Electoral. The spouses only get certified copies. If a certified copy is lost, you can always obtain another one.

Well from experience, I had replace my marriage certificate which was stolen on my wedding night. Someone broke into the house and stole the bag it was in. Anyway, the certificate itself is easy to order but there's more than just getting the actual certificate issued, it has to be legallized by a different official gov dept and this is what takes time. Luckily for us, my husband's cousin is a lawyer and she handled all of this for us. She went to the local civil office in POP where we got married but they had to send our papers to 2 other gov depts in different cities to have it legalized and stamped. They certify and stamp it then they affix a seal and stamp that too. So much beurocracy and so many stamps LOL
