Ever hear of a wolf in sheep's clothing? A duck can easily pull the wool over one's eyes as well. Just saying, culture shock is a real thing.
And...another thing is these people may be prone to acting on autopilot. They are just going through the motions. They dont really like and adore their family as much as they say they do.
Many times when we are approached to put these women in apartments(or "front" them the money to get one) it is because they, precisely, dont like their families but they are stuck with them, near them and dont have the means to get away from them. Even if you were amenable to listen to an apartment pitch or consider it some of them would tell you they dont want to be in the same village as their family just to avoid the bother or the freeloading or whatever thing they dont like.

Which is why the "gringo perspective" should never be the last word on Latino cultures. Sometimes people are very much prone to quaint, facile generalizations when confronted by a culture they do not understand, because they are looking for something they lack in their own lives.

And Dominicans themselves sometimes play up to certain stereotypes when in the presence of foreigners, making things even more convoluted.
