if you have magicjack, then activate your google voice with the MJ number and then change to any number when you are already activated.

You can get your free US based DID (SIP number) from Untitled Document

They will not accept email requests. You have to call them to get the number. I have not tried them but they advertise these free numbers on the Internet.

free number means, they will assign you an area code of their choice. I see no advantage with this vs ipkall.

Ok, here is the easy way:

WHISTLEPHONE. You can receive inbound calls on your FREE USA inbound number. You can also make FREE calls to USA. Yu can use their softphone or you can configure any SIP device (such as SIP ATA adapter) to use with Use Whistle Phone on any SIP device - Make free VoIP calls to USA [Tutorial] | TruVoIPBuzz

TO GET SHISTLEPHONE
go to Whistlephone to download their softphone.
https://whistlephone.com/whistles
works on PC and MAC. you can also download APP for Iphone/Ipad.

You will be prompted to create a new account after you download and run install.

Installation Steps:

1. Download Whistle - https://whistlephone.com/whistles
2. Run Whistle installer
3. Open Whistle
4. Select "Create New Whistle Account" from setup wizard
5. Fill out the Create Whistle Account form and then click "Sign Up" button
6. An activation email will be sent to your account email
7. Click the activation link in the email to activate your Whistle account
8. Start enjoying your Whistle Service

When selecting phone number choose GENERIC. there are very few area codes available, so you will just lose time searching for one available. Most important USA area codes ARE NOT available.

After you get FREE whistle phone number (most likely 928 area code) you will be able to get Google Voice incoming call and activate your Google Voice account. remember to activate Google Voice via HOTSPOTSHIELD proxy.

That's right. Same as the new whistlephone info I posted. Generic area code and generic number.

BUT that will allow people to get SOME USA phone number on which they can receive phone calls in the DR on their SIP device/softphone IN ORDER to be able to activate Google Voice.

Google Voice requires calling USA phone number to enter activation PIN, so one has to have USA phone number to be able to receive that activation call. From all this I saw today I think Whistlephone is the easiest option. I just went through their install and activation process and it's easy and straightforward. It requires you to download and install their softphone, but with SIP credentials the whistlephone account can later be ported to any SIP device.

Once they have whistlephone with the free inbound SIP number, they can sign up for Google Voice and chose area code and number of their preference.

I downloaded Hotspot Shield and installed it but I'm not seeing the desktop button to
"Simply turn on/off the connection with a button on your desktop." When I click on the Hotspot Shield on the desktop I just see the installer again. I am using a Mac. Any ideas?

They claim , free outbound calls to usa but then in the rates page, they actually have rates to call usa. How is that? I thought it was free to call usa.
does the number expire if you don't use it for more than a month?

Rubio, I know exactly what you are talking about and I have done all these tricks but remember, you are talking to people who are still learning about what google voice is and does. Your steps are just too complex for them.

What ever google voice is or does is not the answers for me! The question is what are the benefits (for me) on having google voice. I signed up for this application last evening and I received a "G" number. I am still looking and waiting for it to perform some type of trick:rolleyes:
I am State sided and I travel through out the world. I have a Iphone and Magic Jack as well. I still do not get how this new technology suppose to keep my wallet the same weigh.
AZB, please give me the Cliff notes or the Gvoice for dummies take on the matter.:glasses:

google voice is call forwarding number, you add your numbers to it and it will forward which are dialed to google voice number to the number you put in.
Example: My family and friends only know my google voice number (atlanta number). When I am in usa, I could be in my brother's house and I still get the calls. Why? because I put my brother's home number to ring when someone calls my google voice number. People do not have to know what number I am at, they just have to dial my google voice number and what ever the call forwarding number I put in, I receive a call. I often put in the local atlanta cell number to ring when I am in usa.
in addition to call forwarding to an american number, GV also call forwards to sip number, example: gizmo5. There are sip applications available on iphone and ipod touch (with wifi), which can be programmed with gizmo5 or any other sip data. Now you can receive calls to your iphone / ipod touch when you are in wifi and traveling. I was in london and I received all my american calls to my ipod touch. I was able to make calls to anyone in usa through browser google voice page in opera. if I have wifi, I can make and receive calls on my ipod touch anywhere in the world. No need to set up my laptop or magic jack dongle connected. My ipod touch does the magic for me. You can also use any sip program + ipkall + google voice and you are all set to make receive calls on iphone or ipod touch in wifi.
Now the sip can be configured on ATA box so you just connect the ata device on the router and you are all set to receive calls on a regular phone which would be connected to ata device (like vonage box). PC does not have to be on.
There are many other combos and possibilities in conjunction with google voice. Put it like this, I have not used my magic jack in my house for ages. I receive my calls via google voice on my ata box connected to router directly. PC is turned off and magicjack is collecting duct in drawer.

Well, they have two options. Just sign up, you get free number and can make free calls to USA. After you dial the number you hear a short ad (about 15-20 seconds) promoting their international calling rates. After that, you will be connected to your destination.

Do not add funds to the account, once you add funds, USA calls will be billed at 1.7cents per minute. To stay free, just sign up and leave it as it is. Dial the destination number, listen to the ad, and talk. I spoke with a friend of mine in NC for about 30 minutes and the call was still active, good voice quality.

beware they use G711u-law codec (no compression)**from my ATA logs***, so you will need 64 kbps upload bandwidth available.
