I've been using it since August. Once in a while the connection is a little fuzzy, but other than that it's been worth the $40 or so I paid for it.

I have been using it for a week. the reception varies from perfect to so bad that i want to break it in pieces. Out going calls is good but good luck in receiving calls. Seems like people have to dial several times to get one call into your phone. So incoming calls are not easy. people have tried several times to call me and nothing comes through. A Chinese announcement is made first and then in English (system is busy).
Often times the voice quality is worse during peek times example from 6pm till 11pm. The voice gets choppy and calls drop. many times I have thought about giving the device away. Now it seems, if you have a bad connection, simply hang up and dial again. You will get a good connection in a couple of tries.
So for 20 bucks / yr, I guess its worth it. The incoming calls in a problem. So if you are going to use this device to get incoming calls for a business, better get lingo.

P.S. I am computer literate and have tried this unit on 3 different PCs. I have 1 meg download internet flash.
Oh and installation is easy. Don't know why some people had problems.

First...

reception can and does vary. I have been using it for over a year now and, the majority of the time my magicjack has worked flawlessly. But, when the reception is bad...it's really bad.

I have just completed four flawless calls to/from the U.S. using my magicjack from my hotel in Santiago. Guess the hotel has good flash internet (a thanks to HB for the hotel recommendation).

Respectfully,

SKYPE (free)...never an issue with headphones and mic set up. I have had issues using a camera/mic to the DR, but never a problem in the states.

As of this afternoon...

four calls inbound and six or seven outbound without any problems. None of the inbound callers mentioned that they had any problems. I also experienced no difficulties on this end.

can you receive calls on the first attempt by the caller?

thats amazing, almost all of my friends can't call me. they say the system is busy, always.
Some did manage to get a call in but most just give up.
This device is not good for incoming calls.

My friends just tried to all me and can't get me. Nothing happens. i tried to call my MG number and after 3 attempts I got in the 4th time. So maybe sometimes of the day, the incoming calls suffer. depending on the load of the system.

Lots of variables...

computer, cable provider, where you are downstream on the pipe, number of users attemping to use the service. However, they do have their own network (not rented from other carriers).

I have sent you a pm.

AZB, Maybe the area code you have selected has problems or is overloaded? Have you tried changing the area code to see if the problems persist?

Ive had one for a couple of months..barely bother using it for outbound calls anymore. Out of 100 or so calls, inbound and outbound, maybe 5 were "perfect"...the rest varied from annoying, losing a few words here and there...to every other word dropped...basically unusable. I've never noticed any static, just the gaps in the call. I have a 305 number and no one has had a problem calling me. I basically use it as USA based voicemail at this point...still worth the money just for that. I haven't been able to try it on a good dedicated high-speed line yet, so Im not giving up on it just yet.

Having some of the similar problems that you are having AZB.

I have a Buffalo NY area code....not sure if that is part of the problem.

Other people I know who have MJ say they have perfect reception and have no trouble making calls.

ANy suggestions Playacaribe?

yesterday I had perfect reception. Maybe on weekends its good because not many people use it so the server is not over loaded.
Now it doesn't matter what area code you have. Remember the calls are made though internet servers so in order for me to make a call to atlanta, the MG will connect to atlanta server and then the call is put through to the atlanta phone. Isn't this how it works? So it doesn't matter what area code you have, if the server in NYC is busy at the moment, then all calls going in and out of it will have reception problems.
I have noticed, if the call quality is bad, just hang up and redial again. After 3 attempts, you should be able to get a clean connection.

I have mine for almost one year, had to register it with a Virginia number because i could not get a number here in Alaska....At first the the calls had echoes but then i upgraded my DSL to the fastest speed and since then i don't hear the echoe. I only use it to call within the USA though. Have not tried calling DR or India yet because in order for international calls to be free both computers will need one in each end.
