I understand this but at the same time should not someone at least make enough money to survive. I don't know if there is but there should be a minimum wage in la rep dom of 100 pesos an hour? I am quite sure peeps who hire maids can afford this.

This is not food stamp land and life is not fair. The status quo works for all. Poor folks can feed a family of 4 on 100 pesos a day if they are prudent. If you give them more money than they need they will just waste it.

Seriously... have you had a maid ? Have you had them ruin brand new shirts with bleach? Have you had them burn expensive imported meats? Have you seen how they will do nothing unless you are on top of them ?

They all lie cheat and steal. Keep them in their place and replace every 12 months.

I have someone who comes in on call, not full time. I guess I lucked out because I have never had none of the above problems. She actually uses a can opener and not a knife from my cutlery set to open a can.

She mops, cleans the stove and frig, scrubs five toilets, the whole nine yards and I am pleased. I think she is well worth the less than $25 I give her for a full day's work.

NO, it isn't.............

Isn't that true for the rich folks as well?

Nope. some rich people may waste money but most don't- that's why they are rich. All the Dominicans that employ maids around us, pay less than us and we only pay 5500 per month plus medical insurance. Most of the Dominicans don't pay medical insurance either. Pay the going rate or slightly above unless your maid is truly special then pay more.

Really! We had our maid July for four years. She is a cousin of one of my wife's cousins wives. She is a decent cook and reasonably decent cleaner but her main plus is being able to put up with my MIL, who criticizes everything anyone else does and can be pretty cranky. She is also honest, at least in our experience.

I see that you mean well, but you don't seem to grasp what a poor country is. Do you know what they pay a court interpreter for a whole session? $695! You could spend the whole day in court and still may have to wait for months to see a penny of that.

Like Rubio mentioned, someone who works at a bank may not even make that either. You want a maid to make more than most jobs. In small towns they are paid $200-$300 a day.

Big Macs, pizza, etc. that's for people with money and foreigners. These are not things locals are used to eating everyday or consider to be "real food" anyways.

OK, this thread is about Santo Domingo, in particular the OP living in Naco where I imagine a 3 bedroom apartment goes for $1,000 USD a month and up. I spoke with a few Dominicans in the building I live and the daily pay for a maid was anywhere from 600 - 900 pesos a day all depending on what the maid is required to do.................

Now quite naturally I think the pay scale would be a lot less outside of the capital...............

The reason I pay RD$800 as opposed to the original price of RD$500-$600 is because she does a good job.

She doesn't ruin clothes with bleach, nothing has come up missing, she goes beyond the call of duty, and cleans immaculately.

I would much rather prefer consistency and knowing what to expect than firing and hiring every 12 months and not knowing what's coming next.

You'll also probably get the reputation of the guy/gal that has high turnover so the maids that work for you probably don't give a ****.

Some of you think because you make more money than someone makes you a better person than them, GTFO with that garbage.

Mr. AE's brother has a very large home in a gated community in Las Praderas [SD], they pay their maid 11,500 pesos a month. Three people live in the house.

Another brother has a large 3 bedroom condo in El Millon, five people live there. Their maid makes 9,000 pesos a month.

Those are both live-in rates, so all food, toiletries, insurance, etc., are included.

Outside of SD, the rates drop drastically.

REMEMBER, you don't get "BETTER ANYTHING" in the DR just by paying more, and especially,."TOO MUCH" for it!!!!!
ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND, as strange as it may seem, you often get "LESS""!!!!!
YOU ARE TAKEN FOR A FOOL, A PUSH OVER, SOMEONE THAT CAN ,AND will, BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

500 RD a day? Wow, that isn't enough to buy a pizza and a 2 liter Coca-Cola. This is someone you will trust to mind your kids?

I don't know what the rate is but surely know no way would I be that cheap. I would think at least 1,000 pesos a day, transportation, and a plato del dia with enough leftovers to take home and feed her kids. Just sayin'

Really, what is someone to do with 500 pesos a day?
Keep in mind that in addition to the Dominican women willing to work as maids there are thousands of Haitians willing to do the same for much less, many Haitians will even do it just for food and a room to stay in. Can't expect salaries to go up with do much downward pressure.

Wages aren't determined by whether people can live on them or not, but on supply/demand and productivity. With enough people searching and competing for the same jobs there will always be someone that will do it cheaper putting the whole workforce at a disadvantage because those that ask more than say what an average Haitian is desperately willing to work for will find themselves out of luck!

I'm mentioning Haitians herebexause their sheer numbers is driving real wages down and in other cases making them rise much more slowly than it would had been had their extra competition in the Dominican labor force not materialized.

This effect will end when the massive illegal immigration flow is under control or until prevailing wages for DR maids equals the prevailing wages for maids in Haiti, because as cheap as DR maids work is, the competition for those jobs is not as strong as it is in Haiti itself where wages are substantially lower. One of those two has to happen to end this, either Dominican wages drop to Haitian levels or the government tightens migration controls in order to keep Dominican wages higher.

Right! Depending on what the maid does. I bet you spoke to people with kids and /or full time maids who do it all.

You said yours was part time, and you have no kids, right? Compare your rate to those people. You are indeed overpaying.

Rates in Punta Cana are higher than in the capital, but for some reason people are not expected to pay travel expenses.

We pay more than what people are quoting here for a full timer for just two days per week, but she is worth every penny and has proved it in efficiency, responsibility, initiative and honesty.

Not to mention the Haitian maids are much more productive than "Dominicanas", and steal a LOT LESS, if at all!
I have two of them!!!!!!!!!!!!
They each work three Full days a week, including a full Saturday.
One gets 6,000 a month, the other 4,00 a month.
No transportation, no over night.
There are 8 of us here, 4 adults, 2 young adults, 2 kids!!!!!!
LOTS of laundry, ironing, dish washing, and cleaning.
