Mailing a letter or package to DR

basically, google or yahoo "mail forwarding" and click on the link you like or look in your local yellow pages for a mail forwarding co. Rent a PMB (personal mail box) and you're in. When you have "stuff" to send just call for pick up or go drop it off at their warehouse. If sending electronics or anything of value, bring packing slip and fill out commercial invoice for the items. The Co. running the operation will send your stuff and the other clients via Maritime shipping so add a couple -weeks? for delivery. Don't know if it works well sending from the DR to the US though. Sending mail from the DR using the postal service is risky business as it's not guaranteed it will make it out of the country. DR postal service not reliable yet if ever.

I've actually had pretty good luck with the DR post office . . . .

as long as you aren't in a hurry. I've only sent cards, letters, and photos but haven't had a loss since the 60's. Letters from my home in Illinois to my wife's family in San Francisco de Macor?s arrive in about 3 weeks. I usta keep in touch with a guy who worked at the post office in Boca Chica; our correspondence also required about 3 weeks in either direction.

In April, 2003 I mailed 5 postcards from the Boca Chica post office to the US; 3 of them to the same address (my daughter and one each for my granddaughters). Interestingly the first card arrived in about 3 weeks. The other 2 arrived about 3 weeks later on the very same day. They were in perfect condition; you gotta wonder where they had been!

If I were to ship packaged goods, I would use one of the services the other posters have listed.

Business Mail

I have lived in the D.R. for over 12 years and have used BUSINESS MAIL (an International Private Mail Service with offices thruout the world). Your friend will have to establish an account with them. They have a website. The mail always seems to get thru (with this system you pay to receive and to send). But must admit on rare occasion, packages have been pilfered and there is really no way to prevent it. The mail service accuses Customs and Customs accuses the Mail Service. Advice: don't send anything of great value; best to hand deliver that or have someone deliver for you. Had a friend bring my laptop back after repair in the USA. Would not dream of sending anything like that via mail, FedEx, UPS, etc.
