Can anybody help me?
Some friends have bought a bottle to make mamajuana, but they aren't sure how can they make it.... So any help on this topic would be nice...

Also, Do you think MamaJuana is a typicall drink in DR or it's mostly a touristic product?

Thank you.

It is a typical drink. My father has had the same bottle for about 27 years! He adds very good rum, honey and lemon. But many people add many different things. To each his own. The myth is (according to my mom who's also dominican) that it is supposed to help you sexually. I don't know personally but the way my dad drinks it I think he believes it does.

An aphrodisiac, made of herbs and roots (what variety unknown) along with rum and honey. My buddy bought some this January and tells me his sex life is quite good and it works wonders.
Send him an email and ask him his results.

Mamajuana is actually a natural, native medicine for "la Grippe" -the flu. The contents are made of pieces of different trees, roots, herbs and spices. Rum and honey are added (3 parts rum, 1 part honey), then aged ,...for about 20 minutes before it's consumed. We also add a touch of 151 rum to give it some bite. I've heard of all sorts of things mixed in: gin, wine, you name it. Popular myth has it being an aphrodisiac, but I suspect that description is more for the benefit of our tourists. When my wife came here to Las Galeras 15 years ago, she discovered it being made by a local man, Negro, who still makes it today. At that time, she found it nowhere else on the island and tends to believe it's roots lie somewhere in the Samana area.

Interesting stuff. Perhaps we should bottle it and sell it from a wagon? "Cures everything that ails you plus a little viagra boost" - LOL Seriously, has anyone ever tried to bottle and sell it?

By the way Beatriz, if you are interested in finding out more, I remember a long thread about this around this time of year last year or the year before I think. you might try checking the archives.

whatever recipe you follow.
most important. for a new dry bottle.
fill the bottle with rum first let it stand for a week.
and then throw out the liquid.
than follow the recipe you like best.

Mamajuana is not only a tourist product, I know several Dominicans who drink it at parties when they go on trips with their university... Read this article to understand more about the tradition:
