One of the things about the DR is that since before the feminist movement around the world, women have received recognitions in several ways in society. If you compare it to other countries, such as the United States, this contrast becomes even more evident.

Women in Dominican money, plazas and parks named after them way before the feminist movement (Plazoleta María de Toledo in SDQ is one example.) There are even women who are recognized for playing various roles in the independence of the DR and creating national symbols, some of whom even have provinces named after them. The tallest building in the DR (which is actually among the tallest residential buildings in Latin America) is named Anacaona and many avenues are bamed after them. Mamá Tingó even has a metro station named after her and it shouldn't be said that she was a woman. There are also many private and public buildings named after prominent women all over the country and it seems no one even notice this.

I think not much attention has been given to the recognition of women in Dominican society. It should be something to be exacerbated and pointed out constanlh, a common knowledge by now. Especially now that there is this feminist movement, let everyone know that recognition of women has been a normal part of Dominican society since before the feminist movement got traction. Granted, these people aren't recognized for being women, but rather things they did or was active supporting. The fact that they were women is kind of an after thought. Regardless, there are countries where even today they wouldn't be recognized simply because they are women and yet, here is the DR where that hasn't matter basically since the country was founded when it came to recognition.

Want to know more about Dominican actress Maria Montez, the woman behind the name of the airport in Barahona? I stumbled on this today:

I admit I didn't know about her. Interesting that she is buried in Paris and also was married to a French actor I know.
Thanks for the education.
