I don't know about matamoros but "buscamoro" is a cheap japanese motorcycle in which "padres de familia" work to provide themselves and their family.

Matamoros mean Moor-killer, and I don't think it is used in the DR. "Los Matamoros" is also the name of a Cuban musical group. I have no idea why they took such a name. Google it so you can hear their music.

Context?

Anyone have an idea what the expression ""mata moros"" means in DR? ie. not literally but how is it used?

I am quite curious about where you saw or heard this word 'mata moros'. Can you please provide a context or was it on a sign. I have never heard it and other than the literal meaning offered in post #3, I can’t think of a meaning without a context in Spanish.

In Spanish, there are some colloquial/ slang words with mataxxx and you will either understand them by the context or someone will explain it to you if you don’t. When I read your post I thought of two words right away.

el mataburros- slang for dictionary (literally it means donkey killer but that’s not what it means at all).

el matasanos- a really bad doctor (aka 'a quack' but that’s pejorative to say). This is slang used all over the Spanish-speaking world.

-An equivalent word that’s not slang would be 'un curandero'.

engineerfg, I asked my [Dominican] husband and he shook his head and said it's just a musical group/orchestra in Cuba.

Are you sure about the 'mata'? Lots of bean dishes have the word 'moros' in them.

Mata Moros = Moors killer, that is exactly what it means. Remember that "Los Moros" governaron en Espa?a por 800 a?os reason for what most of the Cuban of Spaniard descendant would like to kill some Moors..

Looks like Miguel Vargas and "papa" Hipo van a meter a Leonel al medio in 2012.

Yes, but I think there is a message here. This trio really kills your dish of moro, meaning, no food for the Dominican people.

Matamoros is the title given to Santiago (The apostle James)the Patron Saint of Spain who is also known as the Moor killer Matamoros .Since Santaigo was the patron saint of Spain every former Spanish land has a place named Santiago and Matamoros is a very common term which I heard from my parents and grandparents.
