Nothing new as of yet. We are in contact with embassy daily and NP is actively workig on the case. As fas as I know they have not entered the house yet. Were trying to work with lawyers down there to assist and get a locksmith to secure the property after they break the door down. I don't understand some of the policy and procedure of the D.R.
Thank you all for your concern.
Martha

You need to be doing this over there in person, not over the phone fro wherever you are.

If you don't listen, expect to see nothing but the walls and the floor left on the property.

Everything else will be stolen.

I hope it turns out well for your father, you, and the rest of your family.

I must ask though, it seems as if he's been missing for a while now; Have no family members taken a trip down there to get a hold of things?

I am really sorry that you haven't been able to locate him yet, but I will tell you. If this was my father I would have been on the first flight down there looking for him. Like others have said. You are better off going down there to get this sorted out.

I hope that everything turn outs to be okay and you are able to find him.

I think it's weird that no one has come down..really can anything that you got going on in the states be more important than your missing father?? It's hard enough getting things done here in person, I can't imagine anything being accomplished over the phone.

For many people who are not familiar with the Dominican Republic, especially those who are from the United States and accustomed to a certain level of comfort in the conscientiousness and competence of law enforcement, it is very difficult to understand how things actually work there, and the necessity for face-to-face, in-country, contact with Dominican authorities. The idea that no one has gone into Jack's apartment to investigate this is outrageous. Not only are necessary clues being lost as to Jack's disappearance , but Berzin is absolutely right, a vacant apartment is an open invitation for locals to loot. It will soon be an entire month since anyone has heard from Jack or his driver, from what I understand. His apartment should have been checked a long time ago. I add my voice to the others here, someone needs to head to Santo Domingo, pronto.

until you go there you are not going to be taken serious on your fathers disappearance. The authorities will see the seriousness of this situation when they see you and not before. If it was me, i would have been on the plane and at the apartment within 24hrs of this situation. The last time i would do is to wait for some lawyer to file the papers to have the apartment opened up.
i just have to ask, why are you relying on others to find him and not being proactive in the search by coming down and showing the authorities that the matter is serious ?

Does ANYONE have ANY information about my brother, Jack Phillips? It is going on six weeks since he has been missing, and his children and I are living a nightmare, hoping that one of these mornings we will wake up and this will all have been a bad dream. You can send an anonymous email to me at snowbound46@sbcglobal.net. I don't care who you are or what you have to say.....I HAVE to know something.....ANYTHING. Please. Please. Please.

Is there ANYTHING that YOU can tell US??
What happened when the apartment was entered? Any clues to pass on?
What does the Embassy have to say on the matter & what avenues are they investigating? Do they WANT people like ourselves involved & if so, in what way?
Who is the family member down here coordinating this search for your brother? Is there anything THEY can pass on to us to help us search?
Are flyers out in Santo Domingo? Are there any available for other parts of the country? Have you put up a reward for information leading to his being found?
We need THIS sort of information to be able to pass it on to people who might be able to look where we can't!!

The Dominican Republic is a place where someone who WANTS to hide away can do so quite easily. The OTHER scenarios are also easy to hide away if necessary. If you feel in your bones that Jack is still alive, then learn to be patient whilst at the same time being aggressive & diligent in your searching plan (you DO have a plan I hope/presume?). ~ Grahame.

I can feel how frantic you are, but not knowing your brother & living on the north coast, all I can offer is empathy. Have you got a family member down here looking into this? Is the person who posted above, ibmeubu, a member of your family? If not, please consider the advice offered earlier. You can't do this from a distance. If it's of any help, I read the Dominican papers here daily & thus far, he hasn't featured.

John,
Your Sister has PM'd & we continued with a couple of e-mails. In those I repeated what you have already read on this forum & this thread in particular - NOTHING will be achieved by the family writing from outside the country. At Least ONE family member needs to be down here IN Santo Domingo coordinating things.

I think MOST of us have already thought about "If it were OUR Father" ............ we would be in the thick of it trying to find out what happened &/or IS happening!
WHY should any of us be frightened of passing information on to you?
What was your Father up to that could cause us to be reticent in coming forward with ANY form of information? Other than "a missing person report" why should the authorities be involved in a manner that would suggest we not work WITH them to try locate your Father?
Is there something that you are not telling us?

Your Sister suggested that 'friends' in Santo Domingo had told the family it was a dangerous place to visit & even more dangerous to start asking questions in ........ RUBBISH. IF your Father was involved with something illegal, was involved in underground investigation work, had upset a number of high-ranking politicos or policemen etc. or was trying to stir up some form of insurrection, then YES, I could understand the 'danger' involved ...... but otherwise this is a misconception of the highest degree & I would suggest your Father's friends are misleading you for some reason - may be for their own gain??

There are FEW on this board (if any) that would withhold information from you until some form of reward was offered. Similarly, the introduction of a reward is unlikely to produce any more interest from them &/or result in a greater amount of information being passed on. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT YOU THEREFORE HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION THAT WE KNOW!!!!

IS there a family member down here yet?
What has the US Embassy doing to help & why can you not pass any of that information on to us so as to give those living in Santo Domingo an idea of where & what to look for?

More information from YOU & the family might be useful in US trying to help you bring this to a 'Happy Ending' (although after 7 weeks of silence I doubt it)!! ~ Grahame.

To Marty Philips-please answer these questions.

1) Your father left for the DR on January 13th, 2009 and you have not heard from him since. Is this correct?

2) Has anyone from the immediate family contacted the US Embassy in Santo Domingo? If so, when?

3) During this whole time, not one person from his immediate family has gone to the DR to investigate his disappearance. Is this also correct?

4) Have you tracked his financial records to see if there has been any activity on his savings/checking/credit accounts? It would be impossible, unless your father had a stash of cash in the DR somewhere, for him to maneuver around without activity on his accounts.

It is quite strange too that we have had THREE members of 'Jack's' family posting here - Martha/Marty Philipps as the son/daughter started it off, we then get John as a son & in the meantime I get an OPEN message request to e-mail from Jack's SISTER called Jan.

1. What happened when the door to Jack's apartment was finally opened - any leads to pass on?
2. What transpired from the lead posted on here to follow up one of Jack's friends (chipan...)?
3. Why are we not hearing more about his POSSIBLE whereabouts from those 'on the ground & the group of friends he had down here'?

Either
youhave NO IDEA of how to run a 'search operation'
you are keeping information to yourselves (then you can not expect our help)
Jack does NOT want to be found by you
the US Embassy (&/or lawyers/friends) have told you to not pass on information to anyone (in which case why continue posting here?)

Or the worst has happened & you should get down here to get this confirmed in some way. WILD BULLS WOULD NOT STOP ME COMING TO THE DR to search a lot more diligently for MY Father & get SOME form of answers as to his whereabouts &/or Death!!

Might I suggest some honesty with us or risk the strong possibility of being ostracised &/or ignored. ~ Grahame.

(Jan did not respond to my e-mail of the 23rd Feb. Did anyone in the family follow up on the suggestions I enclosed?)

"I know that he had many friends in D.R. it seems like you all know each other. My father was someone who lived life to the fullest, always felt life was too short, so enjoy each day."

Marty, I find it odd you speak of your father in the past tense without even having looked for him.

Something does not add up here. If one of my close family members disappeared in a foreign country, I would hop on the next plane and go to their apartment and get firsthand information.

Why are you depending on the internet and speculative information, GO TO SANTO DOMINGO today.
