Officials of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) are visiting political parties to socialize the proposals for the new Mobile ID that will be issued this 2025-26 to replace the current identification and voting cards (cedulas). The procurement process is still in the pre-bidding phase but the plan is to offer a digital ID card and advanced identification system at the level of countries such as Estonia and Switzerland.

A key feature of the digital ID will be its interoperability with various public and private entities. This means that citizens can use their digital ID for banking, shopping, healthcare, and government services, eliminating the need to carry a physical card.

“The implementation of Mobile ID represents a significant evolution in our identification system,” states the JCE document. “It will strengthen the identity and trust of our citizens in the...

So you have to get a digital ID card, but there is no need to carry the digital card with you,
So they will be getting bids for a system the produces cards that you don't need to carry.

That could only make sense in the DR.

Perhaps they could hire people that can write copy that actually explains what will be done.

I get the forcing everyone to have a smartphone is part of this.

Batteries never run down on those. So yes, you will have to carry a card.

As it's mentioned that this system is already in place in places like Estonia and Switzerland and as a matter of fact in my home country in Scandinavia as well, definitely not something "only in the DR". The point is simple: There's an electronic ID established and one form of proving/proofing that is the plastic card with a chip I assume. That's way it's been done here for years and years already. I have never had a plastic one, as even while being abroad, my ID has been on the smartphone always.

As far as I understand, that is not correct. Having your ID on smartphone is just one way of having it. Nobody will get rid of the plastics. You can by all means do everything on smartphone, but no obligation.

I get it. There is no way you won't have to carry the card with you if your battery dies. Normally you can just use your smartphone if you have one.
I only recently got a cell phone, and it is very smart.

I went through a similar procedure for using Ticket Master and a new CHASE credit card. In that case, no phone, no entry to Yankees Stadium. Ain't technology great?

Such a thing probably will never be allowed in my country of birth. It would be considered discriminatory.

Here in the DR, what could go wrong with trying this?

Modern IDs coming this year right after electricity comes 24/7.
There are more promises coming from Santo Domingo than there are 'I love You' kiss photos sent via WhatsApp to Jet Blue mongers from their Spandex Queens in line at Western Union

What allowances are to be included for the elderly population who do not have the technological knowledge or digital equipment to survive in this growing digital programed world?
