Hey DR1's,

I was just wondering if anyone has any info on the morning after pill. Is it available in the DR? I know that abortions are illegal but I don't see any way that they can stop people from taking this pill specially since you can pretty much get anything you want at the pharmacies as long as you have a "prescription". If it's made available in the DR do you think that the birth rate might drop? Thanks for the replies.

According to this info the birth rate is 23.9 per 1000. Compare that with U.S 14.30 and Canada at 11.85 per 1000 so I'm not sure if the birth rate is considered high. The DR is 88th on this list

So the birth rate in DR is not as bad as some other countries according to Anna's list. In the U.S a young unwed mother has a lot of options when it comes to dealing with an unwanted pregnancy that are not available in DR. The mornig after pill or Plan B being one of them. I understand about DR being a majority Catholic country which is why abortion is illegal but the pill is different. Do you think that if this pill was made available in the Dominican Republic people would actually take it thus reducing the number of single mothers? If you need more info on the pill go to http://www.go2planb.com/

By the way I'm just looking for opinions on whether you think this could work in DR or not if made available.

Thanks
Ramon

What about the cost of this pill?
I think education and the use of condoms might be a better method. There's a lot more to worry about than getting pregnant.

And I'm not preaching when I say this but getting rid of a fertilized
egg is just another form of abortion. So if they don't believe in one they aren't going believe in this less form of abortion.

My two pesos.

How can you say it is a pretty name for abortion when it actually blocks fertilization, i guess wearing a condom then is also another form of abortion. You might be confusing that pill with the pill RU-486

Morning after pills are just oral contraceptives, just two in a package, and you can buy them here (well, you can get all 28) . You cannot buy @anything@ without a prescription, e.g. no narcotics, sedatives, or amphetamines.

I think they even make depo-provera and Norplant available and they don't use that either, or the pill regularly so I doubt the MA pill would do anything.

The cost of the pill would be an issue specially in a country like DR. That's why I think the DR should invest some money and make it free and available to anyone, just stop by a clinic, take a pill, and you're all set. This is not another form of abortion and if you make this clear to people I think they would accept it just like they accept the contraceptive pill or Norplant. From what I've read on this forum and experienced a lot of men in DR (and the world) don't like to use condoms and most feel that it's the woman's responsability to take care of the situation if something where to happen.

I agree with you Ana on Education being one of the best methods but in a country like DR where most schools can't even afford to feed the kids and give them school supplies I don't think it would work. Besides Sex-Ed starts at home and from my own experience I can tell you that my parents used the "Ostrich method". They basically stuck their heads in the sand, pretended I would never reach that stage in my life, and hoped for the best. This goes for a lot of parents.

I take it there are no abortion clinics dotted around DR?
I onced asked this question while I was in La Romana and was told that if you really had to get one done then it was possible but costly. So like a lot of things even though abortions are illegal doesn't mean people aren't getting them done.

I think a sense of ambition and educational acheivement could help. Look at the states, many woman who focus more on their careers tend to have less children or none at all, where the opposite is different.

So I think until the economic tide changes, which is no time soon, meaning woman achieving careers, not a job, but a career, things won't change.

Even with that, Anna's posted statistical birth rate about the US(Richest country in the world) isn't far apart from the Dominican Statistical birth rate (one of the poorest country in the world)

You are basing your post on the idea that Dominican women would want to prevent a pre

They don't!
Secondly,Abortion may be "Illegal" in the DR,but it is still available everywhere! So are "Contraceptives" of all types. And "Cheap".Take the money that you want to use to provide the "Pill",and use it to educate Dominican women about the advantages of not having so many children that they can't afford to provide for! I always find it fascinating when someone in the DR asks me, when are you having another baby? I have two boys I say, that's enough. They w/ laugh and say: but you're so young still, you should try for the girl!

Dominicans like to have baby, whether they can afford them or not. It all ties in with the carefree way of life they live. Que sea lo que Dios quiere.

The pill is a great idea, but it wont work in the DR, the mentality is all wrong.

Hey, Forbeca - I also have two boys and I'm not "buscando la hembra" either!

You might be confusing that pill with the pill RU-486.
I know that doctors in the DR will prescribe ulcer pills to bring on a miscarriage... I'm not sure, but I think these pills may have the same composition as the RU-486.
