Hi- New to the cite. I'll be in Las Terrenas over Christmas and I'm wondering if anyone knows about any live music venues in that area or has any night life recommendations? Thank you.

Usually between Christmas and New Years there is some live music. You probably have to just ask someone in the place you are staying or look for posters advertising the event. If you are looking for a disco/club you have Gaia located in the Fisherman's Village . There are also a number of bars and restaurants there. Also you can go on line to lt7.com which is the on line version of the local bi-weekly newspaper.

the music scene in LT is centered mostly at La Bodega which is right opposite the cemetary. That is really the place to be. The center of it is open, there will be merengue and bachata and lots of dancing.

I would avoid Gaia unless you are really into techno disco and why are you coming here for techno disco? But, of course, if you want techno disco and do not mind the fact that I think it is killing the wildlife by keeping them up at night!! ok.. there is techno disco * you have it that I hate technodisco. but I am very very very old. Just a little tiny bit younger than god.

There used to be another bar, called Rockin Piratas, which sometimes had great German guys who did rock but I think that they are gone.

and, also, there are .. or will be.. assuming that there is electricity.. which is a sometimes on and off affair everywhere here, now, it appears, even in Las Terrenas..

Colmados which have dancing ..

There was another disco.. more for the locals. called Nuevo Mondo. right in the center of town. You will be fine there if you speak some Spanish.. if not, then I would stick to La Bodega.

Make sure you find a good concho driver that you like, Do not walk around at night since it can be really dark in places and do not drive after drinking because you may hit someone.

Best is to get a concho driver.. there are licensed ones right on the front street.. and pay him like 500 pesos to watch your back for the evening. That way you have someone with you in case of any trouble.

That is what I would do, anyway.

LT runs on a European schedule..

such as follows..for instance,
early morning shots of coffee on the street at 6 AM
Coffee and croissants are available at two fresh bakeries starting at 7 30
Home made empanadas at 8
Full Breakfast is served at places around the waterfront around 9 One Love at one end Bruno's at the other
Coffee all day and food all day at Barrio Latino (and others)
most everything shuts down from 2 pm til 4 pm
nap

beach.. etc..

dinner starts at 8

dancing and nightlife
starts at 9 or so and goes til about 4 am although I confess that I have never actually closed the Village.

There are new laws in place so I am not sure about what hours for dancing etc...

But I do know that perhaps a lot of tourists do miss the "night life" because they go to bed before it starts.

By 10 PM or 11 or so, you should be able to buy some really great food on the street .. pork and coleslaw.. and follow the crowd to where the action is.

Just be careful... ie. leave your passport and wallet in the safe in your hotel.. Get a Wingman, someone local to just be with you.. It does not cost much and is worth the money.

Learn to nap.

Wear bug spray.

Do not get sunburned.

(and your concho driver will advise you about chicas.. but keep them out of your room!.. LT is fairly sophisticated and advanced. The Chicas own their own venue there)

You can spend a lot of money on restaurants but know that you do not have to. You can eat like the locals and come home with money in your pocket if you want.

TIP your SERVERS

Dont ever give 500 pesos to your concho !! :)

Nightlife, there is plenty depends what kind of music you are looking for....
I personally detest La Bodega, the music sucks and it s a glorified puta bar (the setting is probably the nicest place in LT though).
Several places will be hopping in the pueblo de los pescadores: one love, and another one which name escapes me are good. Even Gaia can be good depending on the dj (that s where capitalenos hang out ).
There are Several all Dominican places away from the beaches but they get packed in week end. Some are safer than others. I like high level, the music is good and so is the security.

LT is not big, just go with the flow and enjoy.

There is a nightclub above the Coastal service station. I forget the name. Mostly a Dominican place but gringos go there and it's a fun place.

The name is Son Latino I believe, people call that gas station La Bomba nueva. There is also a small club downstairs at this gas station, but , for some reasons, it s almost always empty.
La bomba vieja on the other side also have (or used to ? ) a big colmadon (good music, no gringos).

Ok, I personally LOVE La Bodega.. and I detest One Love and hate Gaia..

And certainly would not hand over 500 pesos for a concho ride.

I adore Nuerva Mondo but suggest that if any sort of a gringo is going in there he should have a LOCAL guy with a Concho who is wingman, guide, buddy, and stays close.. particularly in light of how things have been going.. ok? The price for which EVENINGING's work, I suggested ought to be 500 pesos.. which will get the guy protected.

I do not think that any of us can speak to the security of LT now or over Christmas considering there were just 200 troops from the National Army there.

So that is why I suggest that he have a local who had his back.

(see, now I was not going to mention the riots, the burning trash, the Army, but you MADE me do it)

But there certainly is not going to be a NORMAL Christmas season since a lot of foreigners who have other places to go, have gone to them. So we can say where the music WAS but not where it will be.

It s ok MA, Harley did mention the riots before you. :)
I won't use a Concho as someone to have my back cause some of them are hustlers and they will leech on u for free drinks (or pussy if ur a woman), or even ask for a prestamo next time u run into them, but that's just me. I have a couple that I trust though but I have known them for years.
By the way, all the French I know personally in LT are still there, they didn't leave. They can't really because their income depends on tourism and the highest season is coming in a couple of weeks. I doubt that there was an exodus, but I could be wrong.

If one likes to dance bachata and salsa, Bodega is the best I have found in DR. Putas... where in DR you don't have them ? In Bodega they are nice and calm.

I do like Bachata and Salsa and I dance it well, LOL. But, I dont like their DJ, his selection is horrible , he plays the Macarena for God's sake ! Again, I am from NY and we have plenty of Latino clubs/radios, so I pretty much know what's rocking whether it s tipico, merengue urbano, Bachata, dembow or Salsa. Any random colmados play better music.
Putas don't bother me, I just think La Bodega is a pick up place and/or a show off place for gringos/as who take dance classes.
I will give you that the setting is superb, that is why I go for a drink or two, then always move on to another place when I want to move my hips. :)

Both of these places are really just pick up spots for Gringos and ladies of the night and this is not live music.
