I hope you dont mind me posting here. We (my husband, myself and our 2 sons) just returned from our trip to DR 3 weeks ago. We went from June 26 to July 3. Such a beautiful country. I miss it already. I have been there about 5 times. I guess you can say I'm becomming more and more dominicana! :) and loving it!!!

I just came back from a 2 month experience there and it is my second time there and I totally agree with you. I love it and miss it so much. I feel like I left a part of me was left there. Words can not even express my deep feelings towards this tiny island filled with so many beautiful people and friendships that were formed in such a short time, and that I know will last a lifetime.

Went to Santo Domingo, Santiago, Jarabacoa, and Boca Chica. Next time we will hit Samana, Sosua, and the northern coast.

You are all very welcome to join us here who care about the DR for one reason or another. All perspectives are welcome to be shared, as long as they are constructive. I am glad you had the opportunity to go and are getting to know more and more of the wonderful island and its wonderful people.

What is it that this island holds over us???? I am always asked 'Why do you not go some place else?' and every year I plan on going some place different, and if I did not have a friend(s) that lived there (whom I keep promising to visit), maybe I would. But I never complain about going. Only complaint is when I visit in the off season and have three plus layovers and pay mucho dinero. The only thing is since this is now a second home for me it no longer feels like a vacation. I feel I am doing as much running visiting as I do here at home.
There are days that I can actually smell the Dominican air. I went to New York for the Merengue festival in Central Park. It was more of a Dominican festival, except no Dominican food or drink, bummer. It was fun at first then actually became somewhat depressing. There is nothing else like it, and nothing takes its place. THen again how would I know I have not been anyplace else in el Mar Carib. It just keeps calling to me, and I have not left Puerto Plata but twice, and that was just to Santiago. This Christmas will be number seven since 1996. I hope this New Years proves to be more exciting then 2000. Again the question is, "what is it?" besides the obvious. Maybe it is the fantasy!!!!

I am Dominican and feel the same exact way every time I go to Santo Domingo. I think it is the PEOPLE. There is so much friendship and honesty that you miss it instantly when you leave the country, your family and friends.
Something that can never be found in NY, LA, FL ,TX, etc..

I agree with you Rodriguez. I fell in love with the country the moment I stepped off the plane the first time I visited in March 1999. Since then, I've been to DR 4 times and soon will go a fifth time. I also married a Dominican man this past May.

I believe we live a stressful life here in Canada (I'm sure it's the same in USA) and Dominicans, although a lot are poor, are thankful for the bit they have. They know how to have fun and how to treat people.

Hi Katia

Did you meet your husband on holiday? I really like this Dominican guy but I am worried that a lot of them are unfaithful and just want to get together with foreign girls. I'd appreciate your opinion on this as you are married to a DOminican. Thanks a lot Helena

A resounding YES!!! to all of the above! I had the opportunity to work in Santiago in the mid/late 70s. This is exactly the way I remember Santiago,Sosua, Puerto Plata,& Santo Domingo. My wife and I are planning a vacation to Puerto Plata/Sosua in Feb. Sounds like it still the same as I remember it. I am trying to contact some old acquaintances in Santiago. Does anyone know if you can access the telephone directory in Santiago

Re: My trip to DR (katia)

I agree with you about the release of stress in sto. dgo. I live in NY when I go for vacation I go back feeling very good ready to work or go school. I am dominican, thank for everything everybody has said about us. Everybody is welcome when they carry positive things.

Luchy:

Although I am not Dominican (I'm italian), I feel part of your culture. You might not know but I am married to a Dominican since this past May and am enjoying every minute of it.

Unfortunately, my husband still lives in DR (San Pedro de Macoris) but we are in the process of having him come here in Canada. I'm leaving on September 2. Can't wait.

Hasta luego,

Katia
