My zoo experience.

So I was pleasantly suprised to see the animals were kept in a better environment than some of the European zoos I've been to, infact better than most of them. I was dreading the experience being a bit of an animal person of seeing tigers without fur, hippos in small boxes and monkies on chains. None of this, we arrived kind of late in the day, well the heat of the day and so most of the interesting animals were having a sleep under a tree, but you could see them doing what they would be doing naturally in that heat.
It is not an old or disabled friendly place so if you can't walk far or need assistance in ANY way forget it. You get on a road train and get taken to the far end of the park, dropped off and then you have to walk back (keep tight hold as the guy seems to power out of corners as if he is trying to throw you out), up and down hill, it was pretty hot with child in tow.
They have all the interesting animals, lions, tigers, chimps, hippo's, emu, crocs and a mass of really beautiful birds which seem to get the bad deal there as they are living in what I would consider less than adequately sized cages, but not so small they are unable to jump about and flap thier wings etc. The snakes were pretty unimpressive and out of all seemed to be in bad condition. The black bear seemed pretty depressed living by himself, but he had a massive area to roam around.

So as far as animals went, pretty good. The only thing that spoiled the day was when we had to interact with one of the staff to ask for the pony ride for my daughter. it was 12.15 and I approached with my daughter to ask if we could have a go. I was met with a slouching arrogant disrespectful a$$hole who just tutted and told me they didn't do rides after 12.30. Taking into consideration the rides are about 5 minutes we would have been done and gone by 12.20, 12.25 at the latest I wasn't impressed. I tried to point this out to him in a reasonable manner, met with the same, slouchy tutt and none compliant attitude. My Mrs saw what was about to happen and so grabbed my arm and walked us off in the other direction, not before i told him what I thought of his lazy sh1tty attitude to his job. What really pi$$ed me off was that there was a grand total of less than 10 people in the entire zoo, and only 3 of these were kids and so I doubt the pony or his shoes had even seen dirt that day.
So we walked on down to the infants zoo area, my blood still boiling where we were met by a woman with her phone earplugs in, as I tried to grab her attention in her little box she couldn't notice me as she had volume on full blast. I signed for her to get the earphones out and was met with a 'Ehhhhh', as she pulled one out, music still blasting. I asked if we were to just go in, met with another 'ehhhh', I reached for her other earphone as I was starting to get pi$$ed with this, she pulled back and removed it herself. I was eventually told we have to pay again to get in the little animal zoo within the zoo. I pointed out that we paid at the main entrance but was met with a blank robotic glare as if I was mad to have issue with this. I grabbed the family, mumbled something quite rude to her and walked off down the hill to get us out of there. Truth being if I didn't have to deal with the sh1t customer service I would have quite happily paid again.
So overall, our day would have been great if we didn't have to interact with the Dominican staff, such a shame. I should be used to it and infact am, just frustrated with these morons.

Good to hear the animals are looked after, I can only imagine how much the government subsidy must be to keep it open. Maybe the layout was done on purpose, to wear out some of the weaker attendees for use as an alternative food source for some of their animals, jejeje. (law of the jungle)

How much were the entry fees to the zoo? Any zoo in Europe, other than the bears in Bern, would cost between 16 and 40 euros for you and your mrs. to see, right? Sounds like a cheap morning's diversion in Sto Dgo.

As far as the employees, maybe you should chill a bit and just go fishing. Before you get all wound up and pixxed off about employees not having a great customer service attitude, just think about the grand salary those employees are probably pulling down....would you be really anxious to please a red-faced gringus brutus, Anastacio? :bunny::bunny: They could give fantastic service, carry all visitors around on their backs, mop off the visitors hot brows, and give them a cool drink at the end, and never see even 10 pesos for their efforts. After all, the visitors already paid at the front gate, right?

Entrance fee isn't an issue or salary as far as I see. Being a miserable bastard when dealing with families and especially kids is a ****ty attitude to have. If just being nice to people is such a struggle to anyone, anywhere then they shouldn't be working in customer service. Like I said, I'm used to it, but still can't see the point in it and that is what pi$$ed me off. Sure we could have sat and had a couple of beers for little less than the entrance fee,,,,,, so put it up and employ some good staff. General good manners are something anyone should be equiped with, the ones without the manners are supposed to be on the other side of the fence.
Anyway, enough or people might get the impression I'm having a winge, I am aware of where I am and expect nothing less:tired:

Anastacio, remember the employees of this park are botellas appointed there by the PLD to do nothing and collect a paycheck. They are actually going just for looks and are bothered when a visitor dares to demand something from them.

Glad to read the animals are being take care of.

I went there not long ago and we made it pretty late, so didn't get to see everything. I would also day in general the animals are in decent shape. The train ride was a little too fast to get to see anything on the way up there (not sure if it's because ours was th last ride of the day, but they should slow down for a bit more at the cages so you can take a picture).

Anyhow when we made it to the kids area (pony, llamas, etc) they were about to close. As Anastacio said they charge 30 pesos to go into this area. I asked the guys there to let us in for a quick peek and did the Dominican thing (just walk in and before they knew it we were in there). They just looked and didn't say anything and let us look around all we wanted. I agree with the OP that the snakes area needs some more specimens and more care (I could care less about snakes as I don't like them, but some people do).

Overall a cheap afternoon. Front gate cost is about 3 USD.

On a side note I was shocked to find that my phone's GPS worked perfectly in that area.

You did better than me! You got in!

I went to the zoo with about 10 people.... all of which were Dominican, except for my brother and I (my wife is Dominican & all the fam) and we didn't even make it inside the zoo. The place is a joke. A couple ladies in the ticket booth playing with phones and not paying attention to anything.

I wasn't too happy that they wanted to charge foreigners $10 USD and locals 100 pesos, but whatever. Should've stayed in the car till they got the tickets:) I went to take a couple photos of these worthless employees and then the security/doorman to get in the zoo got involved saying we couldn't take their photos.... so what do we do? We took his photo too. Definitely a bad experience and just like Anastacio's experience. Why take the photos? We wanted to identify these worthless employees and annoy them a little.

Yeah... yeah... Photos below of this lovely experience.

It is suprise they tried that on. Yes the attitude is stinking, but I'd have thought they would know that was overstepping the line. Mind if that is you on the photo then you do look super touristy so possibly a good Mark for them.
Shame you didn't get in, you would have been very pleasantly surprised.
Funny method of annoying a native, most will strike a pose for you given half the chance.

the zoo man does have nice nails though

I think the young lady in the ticket booth is kind of cute. She has the perfect facial expression for dealing with "gringos with an attitude". She is probably thinking, Gringo take your camera and get lost.

Any chance a MOD can resize the pics?

The wonderful Zoo.

Prices. Hard to see in the smaller photos, but 100 pesos for locals or $10 USD for foreigners.

Yeah... we definitely look like hard core tourists (My brother & I), but another thing that got me annoyed was a couple orientals got through as locals with no problem right in front of us with no ID check or anything. Lol. I guess I'll have to settle with the San Diego zoo.

I was going off the reflection in the window!
Nothing wrong with being touristy looking, just expect to get hit on more often was my point. After all you were at the zoo so had all the reasons in the world to be touristy, they shouldn't have tried that on no matter what.

They have something similar at the aquarium... think it's 60 pesos for Dominicans and $7 for foreigners/tourists (can't remember exactly but I was there just last month). We were 2 foreigners (albeit 1 with a Cedula) and 2 Dominicans. I handed the lady at the ticket window 240 pesos. No problems. No hassles. No questions. Mind you, I always walk and talk like I'm Dominican (no hesitation, just GO!). Works everytime! :)

Maybe I am missing something but what did the ticket agent and the security guard do? The poster does not have Dominican ID and was being charged the tourist rate. Is that wrong? The poster insists on taking photos of someone who does not want their photo taken. Is that right? The poster should be happy it wasn't a different security guard who might have broken his Canon Rebel camera over his head.

It is no secret customer service in the DR is not the best. When an adult can not bend a little and deal with certain situations something is wrong, especially when they are trying to make a fun day for children.

I have had my share of poor customer service but I have grown to the point to ignore it. That's the way it is in the DR. You either deal with it or just stay home. I find too many other wonderful things in rep dom to let a few employees ruin my day.......
