Born and raised in Chicago, there is no way you don?t become a Vienna hot dog junkie. After going to all the usual markets here, all I found were pork, chicken or turkey hot dogs. NO all beef anywhere, ?.so I thought. Happened to wander upon a little store called Omaha Gourmet in Santiago. They showed me their excellent selection of U.S imported meats and many items you never see in the always mentioned Mercado?s. All of a sudden low and behold, Nathans all beef hot dogs, every bit as good as Chicago?s Vienna. They even sell the thin American hot dog buns. I loaded up thinking these with a big batch of homemade French fries would be an afternoon delight. My girlfriend desecrated the hot dog sandwiches with mayonnaise and corn?.mayonnaise and corn. If you are a hot dog sandwich lover, you will understand. I am now thinking about getting a new girlfriend, absolutely no respect for the Great American Hot Dog.

What, she didn't add hamburger meat, lettuce, tomatoes, cheeze whiz, peppers, cooked cabbage, onions and catsup? - she can't be dominican. :)

BTW, thanks for the great info, would you any chance have a phone number or the general location?

thx

Corn on a hot dog?

Omaha Steak is mega expensive in the US. I'll bet it's off the chart here...

I'd kill for some REAL Italian and Jimmy Dean-type bulk/link sausage here...

I haven't had honest-to-God sausage and biscuits is a couple of years.

So I wouldn't be giving anybody here false information, I emailed Omaha Steaks in the U.S. asking if they had a sales outlet or franchise here in the Dominican Republic. Since their business card logo is identical even stating since 1917. This was their response....

Dear Valued Customer, Thank you for contacting us. We apologize for any inconvenience. At this time we do not have an Omaha Steaks Retail Store located in the Dominican Republic. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us via email or by phone at 1-800-329-6500. Sincerely, Julie Davis, Omaha Steaks Customer Care

I guess anything goes here...Even Omaha steaks....BUSTED!!!!

What? Nathan's dogs with mayo and corn? This insult is totally unforgivable. I suggest you dump her.
Now I was able to bring a huge pack of nathan's hot dogs from costco on my last trip to usa. Its a 5 lbs bag (I think) with 36 doggies inside. I have already killed like half the bag.

For the record, the stores in the DR are Omaha GOURMET, not Omaha STEAKS... I do believe they are affiliated, but not the same store. Believe it or not the steaks are actually cheaper at Omaha Gourmet than they are via Omaha steaks website, however, Ive tried several cuts...The rib eye, the choice strip and the select strip...and while EXCELLENT by most standards, I don't think they are the same as the Omaha Steaks you get in the US...I think in the US, they sell the frozen US PRIME Angus, and send the SELECT and CHOICE to their Omaha Gourmet affiliates.

Besides great steaks, and Nathan's hot dogs, they have 100's of other imported gourmet items, including snacks, spices, candies, other meats and fish, etc...

I still prefer Chef Pepper for steak and other meat though (great lamb chops, baby back ribs, etc)...but be sure you choose your steaks individually..they vary greatly in trim...i.e. how much fat is included on the edge of the steak...and the frozen tuna steaks at Nacional are better and cheaper than Chef Pepper

According to Omaha steaks, they have no affiliates here. They do though use the exact logo and the date 1917. I did purchase quite a few different items there including Jordan almonds. And you are correct, the prices from Omaha Steaks are considerably higher. Many items double or more. I am going to contact them again and see if they are affiliated with Omaha Gourmet here. The best tasting steaks to date I purchased at El National. They were imported rib steaks, bone in at 350 D.P per pound. Is Chef Pepper in Santiago? and would you have a phone number? Thank You

She's packing her bags as we speak. I told her what she did was unforgivable.
Be with another man if you like, but never put mayonnaise and corn on a Nathans hot dog. It's unholy....lol

As of now they are only in Santo Domingo. The main store and restaurant is on Gustavo Mejia Ricart between Tiradentes and Lope de Vega. I think they just opened another location. But they do deliver...I believe even to Santiago (or at least through Caribe Tours?)

Here's the website:
http://chefpepper.com.do/
and the phone number:
809-565-4068

Back to "stuff" on Hotdogs...I assume the reason they slather their hotdogs with mayo, corn, cabbage, etc. etc. is they literally have NO taste...but there is nothing you can put on them theat makes them edible

But even in the US, it's not unheard of...I'm a strict mustard and maybe sauerkraut guy... once in a while some chili or onions...(never all at once!) but I remember a chain called Orange Julius that had (besides their famous drink) a whole menu of specialty hotdogs...like BLT, Nacho, etc...with lots of toppings...and they weren't half bad!

Then there's PINK's in LA...with the celebrity-named topped hotdogs...

BTW, I have some Gwaltney smoked sausages and Oscar Mayer turkey franks I bought at Pricemart...neither are all that great. Johnsonville Brats and their other sausages are sold everywhere, but very expensive...and Ive seen and had several good versions of "real" handmade Italian Sausage purchased at Playero in Sosua, among other places, but again, pretty expensive.

For the record, Emilio's makes a few kinds of sausages, including "italian" style...sold in all the supermarkets here...usually next to the hotdogs. The texture is more like a hotdog than a New York Italian Sausage, but the taste is quite similar...and at about 70 pesos a package...a GREAT deal!! just saute some frying peppers and onions...and make use of those ridiculously large hotdog buns they sell here...mmmmmmmmmmm! OK...time for lunch!!

By the way weren't Orange Julius drinks outstanding? Have to go, my girlfriend is pleading that she wants to stay....Hmmmmmm

There is absolutely nothing O.S can or will do. The only thing that really connects them is the logo and the date ...1917. If you really look at their stock, it's piecemealed from every other mercado in town...except for Nathans which O.S. doesn't sell. All their meat is labeled U.S. choice. Nothing with the logo as the brand...that's left to our imagination.

One question, are those the best hotdogs available here in the US, because I'm having a hard time finding one that I like.

Hard to say...I grew up on Chicago's own Vienna Brand. I think they are the perfect hot dog. I once looked at hot dog rateings and they didn't even place. There were many brands I never even heard of that were rated superior. First off, eliminate pork, chicken and turkey. A true wiennie is total beef. Vienna, Nathans, Hebrew National, Bests, Boars's Head, Sabrett's, etc...all beef. You can't go wrong with any of the above. Enjoy...and please, no mayonnaise and corn.
