They serve REAL beef hot dogs at the bowling center in Santiago. Sabrett's, I recall...but might be Vienna...

And they are NOT cheap...

I bowl there quite a bit. They have special pricing twice a week for the bowling and the food. Normally the bowling is a set price for 1 hour. The special is 2 hours for the same price. The special on the food is a joke. On the hot dog combo you save 5 pesos. The hot dogs are Nathans and yes, the prices are very high.

I have never eaten a better hot dog than a Chicago Vienna dog. The best one I ate was at this small joint(forgot the name) right by the university across the Water Tower. They served the dogs stright from a charcoal oven and the main vegetable was tomatoes. French fries were served in a brown bag. They were so delicious I have still not tasted anything like it.
In the absence of the best hot dog in the world, the Chicago dog, I create my own:
1)Oscar Meyer 100% beef dogs(Supermercado Nacional) about $180 pesos a packet of 8.
2)Salad tomatoes
3)Lettuce(repollada) so you can wrap the dog with it.
4)your choice of mustard and ketchup(I go for imported US brands)
5)Heinz sweet relish with red pepper
6)Holsum Hot Dog buns(El Nacional, La Cadena)Never Dominican brands!
I boil my dog first for a short time, then place the dog without the bun in a waffle toaster to brown it. I slice it a little.
6)When browned I place the dog and the bun in the waffler to tan the bread and now ready to place the garnishes.
While imitating a Chicago Dog is impossible, I dream of Chicago creating my own.
And by the way...if I travel to Chicago that is the first stop for me. I would turn down a fine dinner at any restaurant for a Chicago hot one.
For Hamburgers. The best hamburger in town for me is served at Friday's at about $400 at the Acropolis.

Sounds like you've been bitten by the Vienna bug. The way you describe how you make your hot dog is nothing like a Chicago Vienna original.

1. Vienna hot dog (jumbo)
2. Vienna poppyseed bun
3. Yellow mustard
4. chopped fresh onion
5. green relish (preferrably dill)
6. 2 tomato wedges
7. pickle spear
8. sport peppers (hot)
9. Last but not least...celery salt
This makes an authentic Chicago Hot Dog. Everybody has different tastes, but a true hot dogger does not use ketchup, cheese, lettuce, chili, and the hot dog is boiled only. The buns are steamed. Being that I don't have a steamer, I wrap the bun in a damp paper towel and put it in the microwave. It turns out pretty good. Nathens is very close to a Vienna because of the hint of garlic. I really have to get a life. All I talk about is food and basketball.

I admit, I use ketchup on my dogs. I use a nathan's hot dog, pan toasted. Then I dress it with american mustard, little line of ketchup, yellow (mustard color) relish, sauerkraut and dominican melted cheese from the bottle. Yummmy.
I had 2 last night. Oppps my nathan's hot dog giant bag is almost gone. :(
