Just a question about Mischa

irishdomician said:
Mischa Maria Paniagua 8lbs 11 oz and healthy with a ton of hair.

I'm a student of Spanish (i'm Armenian), & i was just wondering how you pronounce Mischa. Is it like Mi-sh-a or Mis-ch-a (where "ch" is like the English & Spanish "ch" & not like in Bach, for example)? Or does the "sch" letter combination have a specific pronunciation? Thanks even for taking time to read this question, which has nothing to do with your original post...

By the way, in case it is pronounced as "Misha", then it is a male name in Russian, diminuitive from Mikhail (Michael).

Mischa:

Origin
Russian

Meaning
Nickname for Michael: gift from God.

Gender
Female

Given that Russian is the language of which this name comes from, it should be pronounced as it is pronounced in Russian: MEE-SHA (the same way "sch" is pronounced in the German word "sch?n".

Mischa is not a Dominican name. I predict that the little girl will be called "MEES-CHA" here in the Dominican Republic. By default, she could also be called just "MEE-CHA" or MEE-SHU, MEE-SHU, MEE-SHU (which is the way cats are called in many Latin American countries).

True it is a Russian name. We decided to name her after my brother Michael after hearing suggestions from my Dominican relatives of Peonelope, Belkis, Marita and a few others we didn't care for. Also my family in the DR do say the name like MEES-CHA, but there is no reason why they can't say it properly MEE-SHA. I guess its a case of La-bonics as they say. Actually , most of the Dominican side call her Cha-Cha as do I ;) .......... while we are on about names, I saw a doctor the other day from Venezuela and he looked at my paperwork then looked at me and said very slowly with a smerk, Pan-i-agua, I said yes thats right, he continued to say, bread and water, I said again yes thats right. He thought it was very unusual that my last name was bread and water. I thought this was a fairly common name in Latin America?

What I see is that he found unusual that you had a spanish last name... isn't that what happened? Well, Paniagua might not be very common in Venezuela in any case.

BTW... I'm interested about your ancestry. You say you're Dominican and Irish... how's that?

Thank you, Mr. Mark. & By the way, my replies or questions may be quite late, because i'm living in a different time zone; it is 9.35pm here now, while it is 9.35am in Los Angeles, for example...

There was a "revolution" in 1962 I think it was, he was inlisted in the Army but kinda fought independently with some other local rebels. Shortly after it was over, the Army or whoever told him and others to leave the country or their families would pay. He left, others didn't and they did indeed pay with their lives. Most people would tell you that it wasn't to intense but he was involved in the worsed of it.
