Need Help in Punta Cana - Man Arrested

Hey a client just called me and told me a friend of his was arrested in Punta Cana - recently (I'm guessing within the last week). He was down there with family and daughter got out of control with some drugs and he was trying to get her back to hotel.

There was a commotion and people thought that he was assaulting her. This is a story that I'm told. And apparently he is being held in the area without bail. Can someone recommend a lawyer in the Punta Cana area thanks.

Lawyers in the DR travel for client’s need.
You do t need a lawyer from Punta Cana but a good lawyer’s firm.

You can contact Felix Portes at +1 (809) 587-4489 in Santiago.

We also have Guzman Ariza’s lawyer firm here in DR1.

Just make sure to hire a strong lawyer’s firm to move things quick.

If your client is foreign then you should contact the relevant embassy. They have lists of reputable lawyers. I cannot imagine why anyone would think it a good idea to hire a Santiago based lawyer for someone being held in Punta Cana. You definitely need someone with local connections.

Really? A local Punta Cana lawyer?!?
Are you for real?
Connections? You seem to think it’s the same as dealing with the local PN cuartel as it’s to deal with courts…

Everything in DR is based on connections. My lawyer in SD is from one of the top families and he frequently makes a call to his cousin or to his wife's aunt who runs this or runs that. And because of his name alone, he immediately gets some attention and some respect. My personal opinion is also that Guzman Ariza are fine for simple immigration matters and for buying properties, but I wouldn't recommend them for criminal defence work.

If your friend is an expat, then his embassy must get involved. They will definitely have lawyers, good lawyers, that they can recommend. And Punta Cana / Bavaro has grown out of all proportion in the last few years, I am pretty certain that there will be some decent lawyers there. Failing that, get one from the capital. It's madness to instruct a lawyer who is 5 hours drive away when you have some top ones who are much closer.

I stand by my advice.

Get a good lawyer from Santo Domingo that specializes in Criminal Law. Punta Cana is not the place to hire a lawyer for this type of case. SD is 2-21/2 hours away, no problem there.

Also the Embassy is worthless. Especially the US one. They will look to charge you with a US crime if they can, more harm then good.

Guzman & Associates has an office in Punta Cana. It was in the Palma Real mall but may have moved as the mall is slated for demolition.

As I said before, Guzman Ariza is a firm that primarily handles residency and property purchases by expats. They are honest and their lawyers speak good English. What they do, they do extremely well and come highly recommended.

But, in my opinion, they aren't specialists in criminal law, this isn't their forte. It's like taking your Mitsubishi to a BMW garage. I would suggest your friend gets one of the big law firms in Santo Domingo, with contacts - and I stress with contacts - to help.

I would suggest Jose L Martinez Hoepelman (I have met him socially but have no connection to him). He speaks perfect English, he was the lawyer for David Ortiz and he was until recently the Defensor del Pueblo, a role which would have given him a great deal of contacts within the police and criminal justice system. He's also dealt with some pretty high-profile criminal cases recently. If you're you are interested, his firm's number is 809 732 4000 or website www.hoepelman-rivera.com . Be warned he will charge proper prices, so you're looking at maybe a few thousand dollars, but I imagine he would have an initial consultation for free and give you a quote. Stress that I'm only trying to help and point your friend in a sensible direction, and have nothing to gain from this personally. I remember meeting him and happened to have his business card in my purse.
