Sorry for the bother, but can as many people assist me with as many sayings and phrases that will come in useful in the DR. My girlfriend speaks basic spanish but it would help us greatly if we knew a few phrases that would aid in our stay.
for example
1)how to politely ask for a drink
2)how to politely say no thank you
etc..
be sure to include what they mean in english.

thanks in advance

At the dinner table, when my five-year-old Aroa asks for something, his mother always involuntarily responds, 'como se dice?', to which Aroa, after smiling at me, shoots back, 'rápido'.

Buy a Spanish phrase book or do some more searching in this forum. Come back when you're not asking anyone else to do your work for you. All that you are asking for, is easily obtainable in this forum, or on the web. Do a little homework already!

1)how to politely ask for a drink = ?Me trae una (cerveza, jarra de Coca Cola, limonada, etc.), por favor? = Would you please bring me a beer, jar of Coca Cola, lemonade, etc.?
2)how to politely say no thank you = Gracias por la amabilidad, pero no quiero. = Thanks for your kindness, but I don't want (it).
etc..

As you can see, many things won't seem idiomatic in English, but it's the way they would be said. Anyway, even though it's good that you want to be polite, you don't need to be so. If you were going to Germany, that would be a must, but here you're not expected to be extra-polite, on the contrary. If you're going to order something from the menu, just try to pronounce it, use your fingers to tell the waiter how much you want of what you're ordering and say 'por favor'. When you're not interested in something, just say "no quiero, gracias" (Be sure to pronounce that NO).

My late grandfather came in a boat from Nevins, poor and broke. Dominicans usually offer food when they are about to eat and in the beginning he tried to be around. Well he could not understand when he was asked if he wants to eat and said MUCHAS GRACIAS, his plate never came. Finally he asked a friend. He was told that if he says MUCHAS GRACIAS he was refusing to eat or declining the offer. He made sure to say SI, MUCHAS GRACIAS.
