It's for a ferries service... Still negotiating with the gov...

Puerto Plata - Florida
Puerto Plata - NY

Ferries and Cruises are quite different. How can the news paper article be that far wrong? (CC enters here....)

I guess the integration of the USA and Dominican Republic is a very serious plan.

If the government plans on spending a lot of money on the harbor, I wonder if the China plan for a rail connection to the harbor will be revisited or something like that is being contemplated. Agricultural producers need more ways to get product to ships/world markets that involve less truck traffic that damages fruit. The harbor is likely to be used for both ferries and other enterprises if a large amount of money is going to be spent on it to modernize and renovate... I think...

In the Dominican Republic there are three cruise ship ports and two mooring points. The ports are Amber Cove in Puerto Plata, Casa de Campo in La Romana and Sans Souci in Santo Domingo. The mooring points are offshore at Isla Catalina and offshore in Samana Bay.

You need to contact the management of the ports to arrange for the photo-taking and interviews.

See port websites:

Puerto Plata: http://www.ambercove.com (it lists the port schedule)
La Romana: http://cdcports.com/es/puertos-lr/
Santo Domingo: http://www.sansouci.com.do
Samana: http://www.schad.do/services/cruise-industry/
A few days ago I was made aware by the rumor mill that Royal Caribbean has been 'studying' the possibility of building its own private cruise port near Puerto Plata. I don't know where exactly they are considering building that, but if built then Puerto Plata will quickly become the major cruise port of call in the Caribbean (yes, I know PP faces the Atlantic, but if the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, and even Bermuda, yes Bermuda, are marketed as Caribbean, then...) Puerto Plata might also become the only 'city' with two private cruise ports in the world.

When my family was here last month, we went to visit Port San Felipe, and the tour guide said that Royal Caribbean was looking at putting a dock where the power plant is, and that they were going to pay to move the power plant.

maybe you would care to elaborate on why it would be the major cruise port in the caribbean. i guess you say that because you have Dominicanitis, the disease in which you believe that anyting Dominican is the best there can be, but i see no special attributes to POP which would achieve such accolades.

the plant is closed and their contract is likely not to be renewed. moving it is not a problem. what is a problem is barrios surrounding the port. they would have to be eradicated, burned to the ground and the land sown with salt and crushed bones. and barrios have votes living there. this would be a difficult and expensive task to move the poor.

brilliant assessment. there is a major difference between trying to put a port in a low population density area, like Maimon, and the area around the port in POP. i mean, i fail to see how you can relocate those people, and there is no way the port would survive in the current state of the area.

it's not impossible to move them but it would be a huge expense. even if the cruise operator will fork out money for the port itself it would be government's task to take those folks out. barrios surrounding the port are very densely populated and you just know everyone would pull my-family-has-been-here-for-50-years trick, including cats, rats and viralatas.

anyways, i think we have already a thread on that so let me move those posts from here, kinda off topic.

i think the generators are on a floating platform. other equipment would leave the same way it came: in dismantled parts. the buildings are on a leased land and they would have to be demolished.

With 'power plant,' you mean the one in Costambar or the barge floating near the Spanish fortress?

well then, an update on this old thread:
dominican port authority announced bidding for reconstruction of puerto plata's old port. it was deteriorating fast and last year's hurricanes practically finished it off. it's barely hanging in place.
interested parties applying for the construction of this government project need to respect the rights of cargo companies operating from there (grains and such). the port would not be limited to one cruise company and would need to guarantee the flow of at least 500k people a year.

i would really love to see it happen, especially if that would recolate the barrios just by the water and remove the generator close to costambar. and if the port would also receive more cargo coming in and out that would boost the economy a bit as well.
