Hold the presses and let political correctness takeover the DR.

Apparently, calling someone that isn't Chinese "chino" now makes you a racist. Dominican radio show "Esto no es radio" is being blamed of being "racist" for this, ahem.

Imagine all those people who have the nickname "el chino" despite everyone knows they aren't Chinese are now facing an existential dilemma. lol

If I were from the capital, I would stop calling oranges "china," just in case. Puerto Rico beware.

BTW, in the last video put attention around 10:24. He hits it on the mark for this thread.

I wonder when the Spanish translation of the word black will go under the microscope.
Not starting anything just thinking out loud.

Let's be very careful in this thread, as discussions about race are prohibited. Keep it to discussing the OP or generic nicknames if it's going to remain open.

Chino is Chinese but it is used as the equivalent of oriental.
There is no racist intent.
It is just simpler than Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Philippine, Laotian, Cambodian, etc....

That guy nailed it. Unfortunately terms of endearment mean nothing to the politically correct.
Wish more people had this guys outlook and sense of humor.
Thanks for pointing out the 2 spots on his video

I was taught to use the word Asian rather than guess at a specific heritage.
I hope that's still ok in today's touchy feely world

BTS is a very popular group worldwide, that's why it grew into such a big issue. But I guess in a week or two everyone will forget about this just like every previous issue connected to BTS got forgotten already :)

Had a friend research the word Arab and as of last year, you were still allowed to say that.

I'm the same but for most folks here the word that is easiest to pronounce is the one that's gonna stay.

Also, I am as white as snow but I have had various women in my life refer to me as "mi negro." Nothing to do with color.

But, your "Avatar" is "Ratón gris"...
Hehe, when i joined this forum when i relocated to RD in early 2000s, i was supposed to register under "Rattus Norvegicus" just for having a unique& funny screen name using my nationality in the username. But i cant remember why i chose RattusRattus instead. Maybe it sounded nicer.

Btw Im getting grey hair here and there these days and i bet there are one or two x-mother inlaws around the globe that still refeers to me as a "Raton gris" one way or another. :p
