After going to the Jumbo in Agora Mall, I'm impressed. What a nice store!
You should visit the one on Luper?n and Mej?a-Ricart. Its the largest hypermarket in the country (maybe in the Caribbean, who knows!)

The first hypermarch? in the (western anyway) world was the Carrefour opened in Frankfort, Germany, in 1977 — 36 years ago.
It had ONE HUNDRED checkouts, some capable of carrying a sofa. Now THAT was a record number of checkouts, being the first one. The IBM point-of-sale terminals had barcode readers — yes, the technology that in 1990 the US president GWH Bush found a wholey new and fantastic US invention!

Carrefour went on to scoop the world with hypermarch?s until a few others caught up.
Meistermarkt became a leader of the genre in Germany with 18 hypermarkets by the 90s.
Meistermarkt's owner, the self-made man Al Meister, sold out, retired to the Caribbean and built the world-beater dolphin amusement parks on Treasure Island in the Bahamas, and even bigger, Ocean World, right here in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

A curious footnote:
From my job in Paris I had a tangential involvement in the first Carrefour hypermarch? in Frankfort.
Carrefour's genius engineers and management had to build in Frankfort because the French basically ridiculed them out of the country with such a loony idea as a hypermarch? — proving there are many routes to national decline, not just the one taken by the U.S.
