It's a PITA if you have a manual transmission.
I think manual is only good if you have surroundings where you can use it to drive economically. With the traffic, bad roads and everything, I would not enjoy driving manual in the DR. In EU, I only drive stick shift and on the highway you can really save a lot, but the traffic/roads/you name it is totally different there. I'm keeping pretty good care of our torque converter, but I admit, there are many places where I would be guilty to cause excessive wear on a traditional clutch in the DR... Obviously, it's a question of practice and skills, but still...

The fact that many are not painted or have had the painted worn off is the worst part.

There are several in front of the Balcones de Atlantico on the road from Las Terrenas to El Limon where they concreted these large metal balls in the concrete. Just, in-your-face nasty and destructive.
