The renewal is now 2 years for gun licenses. Having said that, and having owned guns before, I am no longer interested in having one.
Not yet. Friend of mine just got back from renewing his permit. One Year !. They mentioned that from may on (maybe) it will be good for two years.

For legal residents that want to renew a pistol permit, that FBI background check might prove to be a formidable barrier to renewal.
Costly process to go through from the DR from what I have seen people quoted by buscones here.

I know because I needed one for my naturalization and fortunately I was able to start the process while in the USA.
It was mailed to me in the DR via EPS , and then I had to mail it to the Department of State for an Apostile using EPS , and then it was mailed back to me and using EPS.

Getting it back wiht that apostile took months from sending in the finger print card.

I believe for foreigners from other countries it can be even more difficult.

But do they already ask for it for renewals? As I understood, they are asking for it for initial applications only at this point. But knowing them, I think they might start asking for it for renewals too in the future. Like you said, to disarm as many as they can.

No. They only asked for the local DR police report which is easy to get for legal residents.
One from back depends where that is how hard it will be.

What I really don't understand, why they discuss now in Senate to allow to renew it every 2 years? Why not at least every 4 years like drivers license? Make it 4 times more expensive but once in every 4 years, it will be the same money for the government but less headache for the people. (actually 4 years for driving license is ridiculous too, in many countries it's 10 years).

I had 3 handguns in another country (not US), had them all in one license, renewed every 5 years. The way they do it here in DR is ridiculous, but what else can you expect from Dominicans... normal logic doesn't work here.

Gleen Burke, you had me at the way the do it in the DR is ridiculous. But it is what it is to discourage gun ownership.
Who else in the world does periodic ballistics checks?

You are right ! "Buena Conducta" from your Country is requested only for new permits. Not for Renovations. I do not believe that they are trying "to disarm as many as they can". Legal guns are not really a problem in the DR. While you can get a illegal guns for 50,000 or less on the street, a legal used glock or taurus in good condition goes for 600-800,000 RD$ today. This insane fact by itself does the best regulation.

I think that all these "measurements" have one goal only. Give Jobs to as many people as possible. I do believe that at least 300 people are employed at the Department for gun Control, the lab and Ballistics. The Building that they are located in isn't much better. The have people in the elevators pushing the buttons for you. 6 Elevators, vacation, sick days etc etc makes already 15 People getting a state salary and benefits only for operating the elevators. This is truly Insane !!!

They do it not because they want a ballistic check, that's just the way to add 3267 pesos to the annual cost of the license. How many gun licenses are here? I don't remember exact number, but something about 200 thousand licenses. Now, 3,267.00 x 200000 = 653,400,000.00 pesos every year. 10 million dollars a year for that ballistics lab that is doing nothing. And how many years that lab exists? That was a good investment (don't forget that the lab is private, it's not operated by the Government, but somebody in the Government has a huge share of profits for sure).

When you feel the need, it's too late to get one.
I've been in more than one shoot out in the US. First one left a POS in a wheel chair and the second time I was almost shot point blank in the face, a seperate incident. Figured third times a charm either way so why bother?
God is good.
Life is short.
Enjoy it while it last.

Man, nobody is trying to tell you that carrying a gun is mandatory here :) You don't need it, good for you then, less problems, less headache, less responsibility. Some people (like me) think that it's better to have one, if it's possible. Honestly, I have no idea why people who don't have a gun even read the thread about paperwork needed to have one.

Anybody can read this thread whether they have a gun or not. Maybe some want information, maybe they are thinking about getting gun. Everyone has their own reasons; it is not for you to decide.

Honestly?
Guns are readily available here.
They are literally everywhere.
Perp breaks in, "oh, I was able to wrestle it out of his hands and during the struggle it went off and he ended up dead"
Mean while this gun could have purchased illegally in any local barrio and the "good samaritan" could be lying his ass off, lol. The lack of any real forensics is a game changer.
You've no idea 😂

You don't have a car, you don't have a gun.... it also looks like you don't have a life either, as you post on this forum every 10 minutes in every thread about things you don't have, and you always know everything about everything. Get a life, Mr. Couch Warrior.
