Carrefour has a small local version in SD in addition to their hypermarket-

Windeguy, if ever in SD it's worth checking out the hypermarket, it have a great selection of ready made and imported cheese/meats and wine.

I did a Google search on how supermarkets decide on a new location ( a couple of years in advance). There are a lot of informed sites but all come down to the same basics. That is demographics, size of city and population, competition in the area ( more competition means it's a viable area) growing population and other concerns.

EXACTLY my point..........
But I can wish for it, no? I would love a Super WalMart or even a Trader Joes, neither of which are here. I don't wish for another Playero, but that is far more likely. Aren't Bravo markets too big as well?

I try to avoid SD like the plague it is. I have probably driven there 40 times over past years. I know it far better than Puerto Plata or Santiago. When I am forced to go there these days, I take a bus and taxis and leave ASAP.

The big one is outside the city on Duarte as you head north.

Maybe if we write a group letter to Carrefour in Santo Domingo they will take notice and give it a shot.
Good luck with trying to get Carrefour out of the DN. Carrefour DR isn’t directly owned by Carrefour France which is the original one and those holding the DR franchise hardly have an interest to expand. In the last few years they have opened a few Carrefour Markets and another smaller type, but none like the full store by KM 9 which has been there forever (before they added the shopping center.)

You have to ask yourself why there aren’t more Carrefour in the DR? Do you really think Santiago wouldn’t be able to support a full store by now?

As far as they are concerned, the DR is just the capital.

Why such ignorance by a large company? Nice to see the pics of a place I wll never visit. I'd still rather have a Super WalMart, but there is zero chance of either.

I guess we can dream.

Sounds like most realistic is either Janet's West, or Playero East.

Is that actually going to be a Janet's ? I seem to hear varying answers on that.

It isn’t own by the French company, it’s a franchise and who got the franchising rights for the DR the one large store produces enough for his lifestyle, He has no need for expansion.

Cabarete
This is very interesting as the developer is Elias Sued of Inmobiliaria Media Luna. Many of you will not of heard of Elias but he is very well known in the construction and real estate field and has built very successful developments all over the country including the Sosua/Cabarete area. In this area they built Blue Green and Bay Rock 1 and 2 in Escondido Bay and they are currently building The Wave in Encuentro, Cabarete. They have built dozens of villas and small villa projects in Perla Marina and Sosua Ocean Village. They also own a lot of land in the area including Perla Marina. He has built numerous high rise condo buildings in Santiago. Knowing that he is behind this development makes the venture a lot more real as opposed to fantasy developments that we have seen in the past. Of course, it may not ever happen but as this is a proposal by a large established property developer then there is more chance of it happening. I can't see the supermarket being anything major, Elias knows the market and knows that the major players in the area are Janets, Playero and the newly branded La Sirena in Sosua. I would assume that this is a smaller convenience store rather than a full blown supermarket.

Cabarete is going to be a very different place 3 years from now.

Was chatting with Windy and a theory I'm working on

30% chance all the current projects finish
30% chance they don't all finish
30% chance they all finish and new ones start

the other theory

30% of units are for investment thinking they will all make money on airbnb
30% are people who will use them for 2 weeks to 2 months, and maybe rent them out when they are not here
30% are people who will live in them 6 months plus and not rent them out

Either way, there's a good chance that there will be a lot more people in Cabarete/Encuentro area (never mind Sosua)

Traffic will be insane. Water will be in short supply. Power outages will be frequent.

I have no knowledge of Blue Green nor Bay Rock and Elias and his business is news to me as well.

Is The Wave a rennovation of the old AI resort shaped like an X that was abondoned or is it toally new construction?

I would prefer a Sirena (They dropped the La recently) over a Playero, but something is better than nothing that I could eventually walk to...

I don't think a Janet's West is in the new office building across from the Ocean Dream area, but perhaps that rumor is still valid. If it were, that would certainly rule out yet another Janets in this project.
