Importing cockroaches?
Customs authorities have arrested a Russian national who was caught trying to bring in 12 live giant cockroaches at the Punta Cana International Airport on Tuesday, 5 April 2016. When the cockroaches were seized, Igor Rusurusov said they would be taken to Bavaro. The import of the insects violates Dominican law because they could be vectors for disease. The insects, six males and six females are of the Madagascar species (Gromphadorhina portentosa). They were handed over to the Ministry of Environment.
Rusurusov said he had imported the cockroaches to use them in a race.
The species may be taken to the Natural History Museum.
