It will be nice to have some other reason than the chicas being used as an excuse for the ten year *imminent* death of Sosua. HIV is suppose to be lower in Cuba and who knows what the ladies are asking. Maybe the new hot spot for mongers?

The mayor will be advertising for chica hunters for sosua. I wonder if the cruise ship will be coming to puerto plata now. Bring it on sweet willie.

I'm wondering out loud what it will take for the DR to make serious improvements to its' tourism infrastructure.

The collective business mindset doesn't seem amenable to appeals to quality generated from competition, so I doubt the opening of Cuba will have any affect whatsoever.

Article in NY times about Cuban cigars, and how cigars from other countries, including DR, may be as good or better:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/19/u...icmst=1409232722000&bicmet=1419773522000&_r=0

Dominican cigars have all but put Cuban cigars out of the leader spots for years now but the Nicaraguan sticks have snuck up on both of them to take their place in the leadership of fine smoke manufacture.

Cigar Aficionado Top 25 of 2014

That Rocky Patel has only been in business for a couple decades and has carved out one heck of a success story for his brand. One of my prized possessions is a box of Decades that he autographed for me on the USS Sequoia at the release party.

There are only a few Cuban cigars that are worth the expense to me but bang-for-the-buck is led by Nicaragua and the D.R. and it is ridiculous that a decent Dominican cigar costs me less in the USA than it does in the D.R.

I remember coming through US Customs upon return from the D.R. and being asked about the few cigars I had with me "Are they Cuban?" to which I replied "These are Dominican cigars which are among the world's best, why would I pay twice as much for a Cuban cigar that's half as good?".

Buying a Cuban Cigar in Cuba is a tricky business.
There are no end of people who can roll a ?professional? cigar.
When you buy Cigars on the street you pay extra for the box, the stamp, the hologram, the ?official? receipt. And (of course) if your a novice you just over pay.
I have met people who work at Government run Cigar stores. They bring in boxes of locally rolled cigar dressed up to look real.
Tourist have no idea what they are buying.

It is really, really, really hard to buy a REAL high end Cigar, in Cuba.

When I am there I do one of two things.
1) I go to a Cousin-in-Law and describe the Cigar I want (as long as a pencil but thicker) and tell him I want his best tobacco, no box, to stamps, just wrapped in paper.
or
2) I buy the Cigars, the Government sells, and real Cubans actually smoke. They are about 6? long and 3/4? thick. They costs $1 for 25cigars (yes, 4 cents each). I used to buy 50 cigars and take them home for my Son (in University) to sell to other Students for $10 each. My Son was always happy when I got back from Cuba.

I am positive Cuba sells the best Cigars, but good luck finding one.

Pass. I just have no interest in visiting countries run by very oppressive governments...Venezuela, China, Iran to name a few.

You prefer open economies with 7% annual growth with a 10% increase in poverty...correct?

I belive Obama's move is a big mistake.

I can't predict the future but it could help strengthen the position of the marxist-leninist-castroist-dynasty.

Any one knows what will happen with the incarcerated opposition?

Will free elections be held?

Will those dictators give up power willingly after 55 years of oppresion?

I don't think so, would be surely surprised if they did

Better to have an open election with those with an education throwing frozen chickens for votes to those many who have not...correct?

The US has a huge number of Dominican immigrants...all from a free society...so what is the point you are trying to make?

Now we have to see if congress allows it. I can see how this help the Castro regime stay in power ( HELPS BRING IN MUCH NEEDED CASH TO THEIR DISASTEROUS ECONOMIC SITUATION), but what does it do for the USA?
Smart move - time will tell. Not enough pressure put on the Cuban government to effect positive moves towards freedom for Cubans.

Like we are in a good economy...look at our UNPAYABLE debt in this country?

I'm impressed. Honestly. Is this in public hospitals or just private clinics where fidel and high ranking officials go?

When I wandered about in a public hospital I saw something boiling and asked, they told me they were sterilizing tools.

I spent an afternoon in a Cuban hospital far away from the tourist zones after falling from a motorcycle...I was impressed at the level of professionalism and competency..as well as cleanliness (although not to the level of the hotels (hospitals as we call them) back on the mainland. It was not just me that i base this observation on, but others who were there. Given the choice, I would far rather have to visit a Cuban hospital than most Dominican hospitals. This is coming from a 29 time visitor with the longest time on the island being 4 months.

If that is what canadians consider good food, God help them

Cheaper than PC, depends, as a general rule I don't think so. From europe AI packages are the basically same

Barbaro...as a Canadian who does not require a week's worth of food on his plate (just got back from Florida and ate at 5 restaurants that grossly overloaded plates with food), Cuban food is fine! When was the last time YOU...were in Cuba???

It's not that it's a good economy like g20 and g8 it's because it's stable and has growth over projected numbers in the last decade and that's what investors like,it's a small economy but in our class were at the top with growth

I am quite happy with Cuba's government. The US has crushed their economy. It is long past time for the US to change.

especially since the people they are trying to hurt are still living large. 54 years of the same policies, with nothing to show for it beside hurting the common man, is nonsense beyond belief.

Gary, where do you get your "information " from?

All the Hotel Chains in Cuba | Cubazul Tour & Travel

i know that at the very least Sandals was there, and Superclubs is still there. both are Jamaican owned.

I stayed at Sandals in Varadero and it is no where near the quality of other Sandals. I was told when there it was owned by the govt. Who knows though?!

I would say I prefer Cuba over the DR, more culture by far and who doesn't
love those cars?! Lol Damn those beaches are awesome as well!!

Some are commenting on people not commenting on Saudi Arabia...etc. Simply a red herring and totally irrelevant. This thread is about Cuba/DR not Saudi Arabia...etc. Cuba's government is terrible, repressive and not democratic in any way, but somehow freedom lovers like Myers like the Cuban government...go figure.
