I went there a few years back on my one and only resort visit to the Dominican Republic. I've been back several times since but I always stay off-resort. Since I haven't been to any other AIs in the area else, I can't give you a comparison, but it's a nice place. My friends visit the Flamenco anually. I believe it is no longer owned by Occidental, though.

I found the rooms large and very clean. I had no problems with electricity or water, but the frequent patrons I travelled with had a leaky air conditioner for 3 of their last 5 trips!!! The one visit I was there with them, I witnessed the small flood that appeared in their room on a daily basis, but someone would just come and mop it up twice a day...we didn't spend a lot of time on the resort, it was a place to sleep, if at all!!

The grounds are beautifuly and nicely landscaped.

The buffets were ok, I find that the food isn't so hot, but there is a lot of variety. Try and get out of the resort and eat at local places! Local food is delicious! The beach is ok, I like the beaches in Sosua better although the long walk along Playa Dorada is nice.

I found that there were lots of families at the Flamenco. So if you aren't going with your kids, there will be plenty of other people's kids there! There are vendors on the beach, but they aren't pushy, so you will enjoy your time at rest if you like to sunbathe.

There is also a huge pool where they have water aerobics and other activities. Like I said, I did not spend much time in the resort, but I know they have shows and many excursions available.

Why do my friends go back there every year? Quite frankly, they like the location! It's close to Puerto Plata and Sosua plus they don't mind eating at the buffets.

Some advice is to try and book the excursions outside of the resort - they'll be a lot less expensive. Make sure you get out from behind the gates and see what the rest of the area has to offer too!

Have a great trip!
