Lots of mosquitos around and with this heat need short pants. Anybody find some stuff that works better than others? Plant based? BTW any homemade recipes since repellents weren't always around. What did grandma use?

Avon has/had a product called "Skin So Soft" that I swear works for mosquitos. They also have/had a bug repellent that works pretty well. I am pretty sure it is still available although it's been a while since I purchased any.

Skin So Soft works for me as well, but I've found that it's gone if I sweat too much.

For a long time, it was the only thing I could use. Regular sprays made me break out in a red rash. I have also been told to use citrus oils or lavender oil.

Years ago when I had my Native American/Mountain Man type store in USA I sold pure aroma therapy oils. I made an insect repellent. Lavender. Patcholi. Cedar. Menthol. Citronella. I called it Bug Jiz. I sold a lot of it. A little oil went a lkng way. All those.oils are natural insect repellents.

You should consider putting screens on the inside of your windows (or the outside if it's a building with management accepting of this or a building without management) and maybe screen the balcony if you have one. That will reduce considerably the amount of mosquitos that makes it inside. It will not keep 100% out, unfortunately.

Vanilla (liquid) in little bottles sold in colmados repels mosquitos. Apply to exposed skin.

You don't want mosquitoes try living in Alaska than you just have to deal with the polar bears eating out of your garbage cans

We planted mint along the back of our (open) rear raised patio room. (Also makes nice iced tea!). About 5 pm I light a couple of citronella candles and burn incense until we go inside for the night. Don’t think I was bitten in the 3 months we were there. We also have screens on all windows and magic mesh magnetic curtains on the doors.

I always have mint oil in my diffuser that seems to work really well.

The excessive number of mosquitos in the DR I don’t think is natural for the most part. Mosquitos need standing water to lay their eggs and in no time the mosquito population is expanding like crazy.

Most people everywhere in the DR do nothing to reduce standing water. In the cities, the way the curbs are made collect much standing water. The tires and other stuff abandoned in places also collect much water. Many home roofs collect puddles, usually flat roofs. Etc. Mosquitos are in a reproductive heaven in the DR.

I think if most people did what is necessary to reduce the mosquito reproduction, the amount of mosquitos wouldn’t be as many as there are. It doesn’t matter if you take care to eliminate standing water in your property, none of the neighbors will be doing that. Guess where the mosquitos come from?

I am lucky there are very few mosquitos where I live. I do have a breeze most of the time and my house is on top of a hill. Its very nice to sit outside in the evenings as compared to Canada eh.
