It seems music is often lost in labels.

Fusion, progression, new technology, and a million other factors, will hopefully allow music to continually evolve, as it always has.

Music is creative art, and it thrives best when it is not strictly categorized and confined to the tiny boxes of absurdly prescribed criteria, and the ridiculous notions of what "belongs" and what doesn't.

there IS one omega song that I've been looking for. Cant say that is a great song...but i'd still like to find it. It pretty much sounds like he's groaning "ohhh ohhh ohhh, ohhh ohh ohh ohh" like i said...not a great song...but i'd still like to get the title.

Drive around Sto. Domingo and youll see hand painted billboards advertising differant musicians playing at various venues. I must have seen Omega 3 times last summer when I was down there and seen another 6 posters advertising him as well.
Omega is "street style" mambo merengue. Thats how local Dominicans described him to me. You wont see young Dominicans showing up to see traditional/classic/popular merengue, thats for the "old folks". Mambo merengue is for the youth.
Be careful if you go and see him play at a carwash, its like going to see DMX in New York, all the thugs come out. Carwash concerts are crazy. They are held at carwashes after hours. Look for him at some of the more "exclusive night clubs" if you dont know your way around the city. Especially if youre a gringo or cant speak spanish.
Hit up the kids selling CDs in the corner, you can buy his CDs for about 50-100 pesos depending on how you bargain.

I'm no musician, but I don't know how anyone can say it's not music? He uses a full orchestra with all the traditional instruments. Is that not music?

Now, if you want to say he's not a 'singer' that's a different argument but his orchestra definitely plays music.

As a musician, I would be privileged to jam with Papi Juan and Co.

Hey... I even sat in with Shania once at a small gig once, and I am not a country bumpkin.

Thanks for the info. and advise. I have the majority of Omega tracks and watched his performances on Youtube. CD?s are hard to come by in the US. They have been on backorder for some time on Amazon and CD Universe. But really want to see him perform live, so hopeful ?..Thanks again!

Maybe Mangue Tu

Can anyone help with a concert schedule for Omega? Does he perform at a venue regularly?

Is there any place I can find a schedule of Omega Y Su Mambo Violento concerts? I went to two MySpace pages but none listed a concert schedule. I?ll be in Santo Domingo July or August and trying to schedule my trip around see him perform. I know he performs in the US also but no luck on that either.

Thanks

yes there will be upcoming shows in April 2011 please email me at DGNYC@gmail.com to get concert dates and purchase tickets

My husband despises Omega. His brother told him there is a radio station in Santo Domingo who refuses to play any of his music - anyone know if this is true?
