My personal ride for MANY years was a beautiful '70 BSA Lightning, supposedly the fastest motorcycle in the world at the time. Scan of the original picture from the late 80's:

All in perfect original condition (including those god aweful Zener diode that would just shut down the electrical system when the least bit hot...)

Back in the day I owned a 1968 650 cc TR6C Triumph Trophy and a friend owned a Norton Commander...
They were both pretty quick.....How would they have compared with the BSA Lightning.....almost bought one...
His Norton was faster than my Triumph.....

The Norton Commando's were 750's and had a few hp more than the 650 Trumpets (I've owned both.) The 650 Nortons were around 43hp, the BSA around 48. When the Lightning came out in the earlier 60's it was "the fastest"...but that doesn't last long. The 650 Trumpets had around 45hp. Norton's biggest problem was cratering engines. The cranks were crap, about as bad as Lucas electrics.

Then the Honda 750-4 came out in '69 with a LOT of power, 68 claimed but 70+ on the dyno, and for thousands less: game over.

and of course the driver had to be able to handle that horsepower....

and not just on a straight road...

The Brit bikes weren't known for their handling characteristics, with flexible chassis and bad brakes...

My first street bike, 500cc 2 stroke, smokin fast on the straights, but hang on in the corners.....

Had one in the late 70's, blinding fast but NO BRAKES!!! Pretty much a drag bike only...

They now go for a small fortune in France, about their most sought-after classic bike.

They were called "widowmakers"

I had one for about 3 weeks, before I drove it into the side of a car. Just fast enough to ruin the bike without killing myself.

My dad bought it for me for my birthday.
I went too fast and drove half way through an intersection, unable to stop. I was lucky no cars were coming. Sold it shortly thereafter, traded for a 550-4...

But, lordy, would that thing go. Once you got into the 2-stroke power curve it was frightening...

My kind of bike when I was 16 - far more eco-friendly.

Occasional ride on the back of a friends Vincent 1000 - wow.
Record run - beats the wheelies in the DR now.

I rode a Honda 750 Four in Thailand in the early 70s.
SCARY Fast!
Driving on the "wrong" side of the roads made for some wild rides.
I am VERY surprised we are here to post on DR1!
