Does anyone have Onstar in the DR and does it work? The stated policy is that is does not work or is not supported in the DR. However, as with other services, sometimes a service is not supported or guaranteed in the DR, but in reality, it does work. If someone has it, can you tell me if it is reliable, or are there many locations where the vehicle cannot be tracked?

If you are concerned about being tracked, whether or a not a vehicle is equiped with an Onstar system should be the very least of your worries.

Cell phones, air tags and GPS boxes are far more effective.

No, I am not worried about being tracked. I WANT to track my car.

Aftermarket GPS Trackers

Popular devices:

  • Bouncie - plugs into OBD port, $8/month
  • SpyTec STI GL300 - magnetic, battery-powered
  • LandAirSea 54 - real-time tracking, $20/month
  • Vyncs - OBD tracker with driving insights

Installation Options

  • OBD port - easiest, plugs into diagnostic port
  • Hardwired - more permanent, requires installation
  • Magnetic - temporary, battery-powered
  • Hidden placement - under dashboard or bumper

OnStar Coverage in Dominican Republic

The short answer: OnStar coverage in the Dominican Republic is very limited or non-existent.

Here's what we know:

Primary Coverage Area:

  • OnStar services are primarily available in "U.S. and Canada only"
  • The coverage maps and services appear to focus on North American cellular networks
International Limitations:

  • OnStar relies on cellular and GPS networks for its services
  • The Dominican Republic would need compatible cellular infrastructure and agreements with OnStar
  • Most OnStar features require connection to OnStar's call centers and data networks

What This Means for You:

If you're traveling to DR with an OnStar-equipped vehicle:

  • Emergency services likely won't work
  • Remote vehicle commands (lock/unlock, start) probably won't function
  • Vehicle tracking may not be available
  • Navigation services might not work
Alternatives for DR:

  • Local GPS tracking devices that work with Dominican cellular networks
  • International roaming data plans for smartphone-based tracking
  • Local car rental companies often have their own tracking systems

Bottom Line:

OnStar is designed primarily for the US and Canadian markets. If you need vehicle tracking or emergency services in the Dominican Republic, you'll likely need alternative solutions that work with local cellular networks.

Winde no more ChatGPT
This study indicates that ChatGPT is an unreliable source of the peer-reviewed literature regarding questions related to TKA and THA as 64% of sources were deemed inaccurate, specifically referring to these sources as not able to be traced back to an existing publication.

Total Garbage.......................

Why does ChatGPT lie so much?

basically, most of the lying is generated to coverup compute budgeting, because if you hit some sweet spot, the answers are insanely accurate, then down into the weeds..>Mar 31, 2025

I use this one, can send you a direct contact, let me know if this is what you're looking for.
Trip control, speed, route review, live tracking via the app/browser, etc.

Thank you. This is exactly the kind of useful information that I was searching for. I sent an inquiry on their webpage, but if you have a direct contact to share with me, that would be better.

I looked at surveys about chat and it really doesn't fit here on DR 1 Here's why and what the survey proved: when ppl use chat they get information that is available from many sites but what THEY DON't get is feelings, emotions, or opinion. Chat should only be used when you add to it. You need to express your opinions or the opinions of others you respect. You need to add content. NOT JUST CUT AND PASTE. Classrooms across the civilized world are turning back anything that looks like you just copied and pasted with our any real thought.
Anybody can go to Chat. You don't need DR1 as a middle man. It's free and available to the world. DR1 provides content on a particular subject bc it most probably was experienced by one of its' members.

A real life experience regarding the DR AND USA...CHAT, GOOGLE, SAFARI tells you about the form 1-30 (US citizen summoning a family member to US. WHAT CHAT DOESN'T TELL YOU is how one can shape and bend the rules. It tells very little about short cuts and exceptions. It's cut and dry.

AI when used properly, effectively and in a controlled fashion can be very helpful but, one must set parameters to avoid false information. It's often far better than the random unsupported opinions of so many here

Site used to be more relaxed and fun. Nowadays, seems more socialist style moderation than not. Also interesting to note is how our main musician man here on DR1 catches all this flak, meanwhile a certain HRC employee has been running roughshod over any member that doesn't fit his model for years and no one ever sees him called out. I'm personally never bothered by being called out or taking pot shots. I just have a habit of not disguising the truth. And the truth is, turns out, no one likes their baby called ugly. God bless!

Like the good gentleman from Jacksonville said, slip an Airtag somewhere secure and discrete and there you go. Why sign up for some dinosaur like OnStar?
My best friend had a perfect son. Very intelligent never did anything wrong. He put one of these services in his car that monitored everything. His location, his speed everything. It turns out the son was not that perfect. The services can tell you how fast the car is going, where it is, etc.. it turns out that many times the car was going over 100 mph and the car was not where it should have been. Having said all that I have the same situation where I want to know exactly where my car is and how fast it is going, and whether or not it has been returned at the time that I requested. I initially requested information about OnStar, but I am not committed to their service and I don’t know whether it will work in the Dominican Republic. Another poster gave me a great suggestion for a service that works well in the country. I will give it a shot. OnStar’s stated policy is that it does not work in the DR. there are other services that do not commit to being functional in the DR. My best example is SiriusXM radio. They said it was not functional there a few years ago, but I bought a radio, and it indeed did work. You could buy an apple AirTag and it will work as long as there is another Apple devices nearby but sometimes in the mountains that does not work. I was looking for something that works 24/7 no matter where they are in the DR. Another poster gave me a suggestion and I will experiment with that one.

An Airtag is dependent on another Apple device nearby. If that was in my car, it could be lost in the mountains for months before it pinged on another IPhone, and by that time, the battery could be dead.
