I know that many of you DR1 forum readers and vacationers generously donate goodies and supplies for the kids of the poorer communities in Punta Cana. I thought you might like to see where some of your donations go.

Briefly: The other day I joined Mike Fisher and his wife Tania for their monthly food shopping trip to stock the kitchen at El Mundo Mejor Orphanage in Higuey.
Here's the article I wrote about the trip El Mundo Mejor Orphanage in Higuey, Punta Cana warning: this article contains photos of seriously cute children ;-)

Enjoy!

A pleasure to read with wonderful photos of a real success story supported and funded by the generosity of all concerned. Thank you, Yumi, for sharing it with us.

Very nice story and pics. I would be interested to know of any such charities or orphanages in Puerto Plata area? This is something that I would interested to visit and let my friends know about if they wish to donate or pitch in on their next trip to the area. My family and I brought gifts for the hotel workers children when we came down last time...mainly school supplies and toiletrees which were received with big smiles. Perhaps it would be nice to know what type of supplies are most needed before we make our next trip down. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your kind words, it was a pleasure to bring awareness to such a worthy project. And great to see donations reaching their intended recipients.

For donations on the north coast see this link to Beyond The Beach Childrens' Foundation mentioned in my article. It lists the charities supported and contact info - there are some on the north coast. There is also a wish list on their site.

In Punta Cana - for goods donations (not cash) contact Mike Fisher via www.excursionscorner.com or PuntaCana Mike (Mike Bryant) on puntacanamike@gmail.com

Thanks again for taking an interest. Keep those donations coming!

Shiraz,
2 of the projects assisted on the northcoast are named Mustard Seed and Dreams Project.
on the Beyond the Beach link provided by Yumi above you find info about them, they are the 2 mayor assisted projects of the Canadian Foundayion.
there are many spots everywhere worth to assist, most not named or they do not even have a name.
we give usually around half of the donations to known kids and families right on the streets, you find them in every neighbourhood.
and yes,
the Boys in Higuey Rock, well worth to bring attention on their place, it made a big difference in the short around 2 years i know the place.
earlier this year i passed by ther and found in the classroom a huge TV screen, a real Cine with DVD player, kiddies all there watching munecitos.
Xarlos, their carekeeper, told me it been people from bavaro who been there for a visit, saw the small mini TV they had and a couple hours later they came back with that large monster in the Jeep.
theer are great people out there, so to bring attention to the different places brings mor helping hands.

Mike

Thanks for posting about this! Yes, those are dangerously cute kids and wonderful caregivers. Kudos to the many members of DR1 who make a difference in their communities with their work.
