On a side note...

Your right Scott, most of what you would call art here is trash.
Then again, you or Bill just don't move in those social circles or spend hardly anytime in Santo Domingo or Santiago. Please don't let your minimal exposure lead you to believe you're qualified to talk about art in the DR.
I would have thought you would try to hide your ignorance a bit better Robert and easily attained by not taking cheap shots. I have been into every Art Gallery worth seeing and open in Santo Domingo. Some I have been to several times. You don't need your so called social circles to have good taste in art. That would be evident to anyone that has been to your apartment :bandit:

I have in my collection Dali, Picasso, Rockwell, Neiman, Hardy and many others of the same ilk. I am also an Artist Representative for one of the most popular and best selling contempory artist in the Sporting Art field and deal with people in this field all the time. I sold three pieces this week Robert into the four thousand dollar range "in the Dominican Republic". Want to talk Art with me Robert? You better get an education first.

I have a couple of Domingo Batista works, Jimenez, Daran and of course the wonderful Mr Pedro Chirimoya photography which are all Dominican Artists that I feel have merit. I am sure that there are many others but Art is something that you cannot buy for another because it is so personal. One mans treasure is anothers trash in the Art field.

I would not take the liberties to tell Bill or myself about the circles you hardly know a thing about. Making comments that you have no clue about Robert sets you up to look like a complete fool which is something you would more likely than not care to hide from people.

What I was referring to is what is mostly seen thoughout the country in shops, stands and on beaches. Same boilerplate Oil crap stamped out mostly by Haitians. This is what dominates what people see in the DR Robert.

Hope you learn something from this before you delete it Robert.

Your buddy,
Scott

Why would I delete your post?

I never said I was a DR art expert, neither are you qualified to say most art here is trash.
Would that be presumptuous or ignorant?

I'm just pointing out a fact that the DR has plenty of great artists.
Plenty of them show pieces in galleries internationally and produce sort after pieces.
Just because "you" don't know them or have never seen their work, doesn't mean they must be trash.

I am also an Artist Representative...
Come on, your talking to me. Your sounding like the Max Clifford of artists :)

I have been into every Art Gallery worth seeing and open in Santo Domingo.
Santo Domingo is bigger than the Colonial Zone.

I'll let AZB take over now and have a chat with you about "real Dominicans" ;)

"Why would I delete your post?"

For the same reason you delete others and make comments where people can not respond. Could it be insecurity?

"I never said I was a DR art expert, neither are you qualified to say most art here is trash. Would that be presumptuous or ignorant?"

Well I actually never said that Robert although it is entirely true. Most art everywhere is trash and especially in the DR. That would be a "FACT".

"I'm just pointing out a fact that the DR has plenty of great artists.
Plenty of them show pieces in galleries internationally and produce sort after pieces.
Just because "you" don't know them or have never seen their work, doesn't mean they must be trash."

hahaha, now you are twisting and squirming Robert. Glad I am not you. It gets funny when people try to rewrite what people say Robert.

Let me quote you to refresh your failing memory.

"I have picked up a few pieces that are nice for very little money. One piece I picked up at a art framer in Puerto Plata and others I picked up at Altos de Chevon which is an art school up the road from Juan Dolio on the other side of the Island."

Now how can you try to twist what I said?

I never said anything different than you just said. I more or less agreed that there is some nice artwork in the DR. I think Bill may have said something different but your petty slights were directed to me. You can't fool me, I have been to your apartment Robert :bandit:

"Come on, your talking to me. Your sounding like the Max Clifford of artists :)"

I don't know Max Clifford Robert and I never said I was an artist although I use to be a commercial artist and a very successful one. I did work for companies such as American Express, Macys, Playtex, Seagrams and Fleishmans Distileries, Empire Chicken, Potamkin Cadilac and many many more.

You probably handle things that I have designed Robert.

"Santo Domingo is bigger than the Colonial Zone".

Well everytime you take me out to eat you seem to take me to the same places in the Colonial Zone Robert. Personally I think that they are over priced and the food just fair. You need to get YOUR *** out of the Colonial Zone every once in a while. You should get some taste in food as well as art in the near future if you want to impress people.

"I'll let AZB take over now and have a chat with you about "real Dominicans" ;)"

Oh yeah, I would love to have him or even you tell me about the "Real Dominicans". Funny thing when I was in the states I saw no men standing on the side of the Road PISSING like I see here in the DR by "Real Dominicans".

I also missed the Dominican Drivers when I was there. It took me a long time to realize I wasn't driving in a video game like I do in the DR with "Real Dominicans" going the wrong way down a one way street, stopping on main roads in the middle of the road blocking traffic so they can chat to a lady, throwing garbage out of their windows in such volume I think I am in a tornado at a refuse dump, motoconchos asking "CONCHO?" as I am walking into the Casino (Guess the dumb bastards cant figure out which way I have to be walking to need their services), cops who aren't even authorized to give vehicle tickets stopping me on a 50cc scooter looking for bribes.

Which one of these guys do you want to introduce me to Robert? Oh, I forgot these aren't "Real Dominicans", these are made by Mattel!

One day Sylvia comes up to my car window and asks why I am sitting still in my running car laughing. I was on the main street in Sosua and a guy decides to back out of the wrong driveway at Century 21. The Dominicans behind me pass me and butt up to the guy like a T-Bone and the guy cant move. Horns are blowing and no one can move. This is the typical "REAL DOMINICAN".

So are you going to tell me about the High Falluting Big Money'd Dominicans or the "Real Dominicans"?

Well back to the crap that they peddle as art. You know the one with the blue sky, a freakin Palm Tree and the Ocean in EVERY one of them. I am going to buy you one of these to dress up your apartment a bit Robert! :bandit:

Your way to good for this country...
Now you are what Robert, doubting what I am saying is the truth? Poor guy, you simply just don't understand much but it will come to you in time. Life experience takes time and although you are a smooth operator time will give you some wisdom.

I never said I was "too" good for this country Robert. I also don't think that this backwards, corrupt 3rd world country that practices Voodoo Economics is too good for me or anyone else for that matter either. Robert, it is everything I have said and you know it just as well as I do.

I simply get a chuckle out of your "Real Dominicans". I can't wait for you and AZB take them out of your closets and show them to the rest of us. It must be that all the ones that the rest of us meet are made by Mattel the Toy Company!:) I mean no offense to anyone and I know plenty of Dominicans that have a lot of class but like the Art the majority are NOT what you call "Real Dominicans" although I know that you want to believe it.

Best Art Galeries and museums

I dont know to whom to address this question ,,,In order to have a good idea of modern Dominican art (have always liked paintings from painters who are still alive and if possible not yet in museums )what galeries are the right ones to visit and what museums (assume the museum of modern art in SD) are to visit to start to get some knowledge of Dominican Art . I like modern art and paintings in general and now that I'm retired can spend some more time on this hobby ..
Thanks for any help

I found a lot of places in the Naco section of Santo Domingo. There is an Art School in the Colonial Zone that was interesting. Altos de Chevon was a real cool place to go also. There is a big magazine that starts with Arte that we picked up at a bookstore that listed all the places but I don't have it in front of me. It was the size of a Yellow Pages book.

Excellent - we seem to have got past the Robert & Escott show, now we can progress without fear of this being "CLOSED". Actually MY whatever it is, is BIGGER than both your whatever they are's!!

1) Yes there are a number of "Junk Yards" selling used parts in the Santiago area & therfore I presume the same can be said of Santo Domingo. The problem with most of these is that no-one seems to know what they have in stock as no serious inventory has ever been done & items are seldom (if ever) noted when they come in. It is POSSIBLE that a well stocked & well INVENTORIED (Computerised) scrp metal/junk yard could do a VERY nice trade in the DR. Get 5 or 6 of them chatting togther & concentrating on different models/manufacturers & you could sweep up the market!!

2) Art, as so correctly stated by Escott, is a very personal thing. I do not put much credence into art paintings which are purely an investment (couldn't afford the bloody things anyway) & prefer to look at paintings, works of art that appeal to ME, not what some art critic thinks is "GOOD". I don't like Picasso's works, to me they are disjointed & unappealing. The same can be said for Lowry, never did like those "Matchstick-men"!! Now the painting done by a Haitian. specifically for our old wooden house in town ...... well that got LOTS of gracious comments from guests even though it only cost a few US$$$$. Ther ARE good artists here in the DR, the ones who perceive & introduce perspective into their paintings - the FLAT stuff (although the cultural thing) just doesn't 'Hang' with me at all.

3) The REAL Dominicans????? I find them all over the place - in shops, running garages, in offices & even walking down the street!! Come on guys, REAL Dominicans are everywhere & are fantastic people IF you want to recognise them as people. No, they are NOT better than me, the same as I am NOT better than them ........ we are just different & happy to be friends in our differences!!

Now THERE is a thought provoking scenario ....... the Dominicans & OURSELVES are just like paintings, some flat & without perspective, others are full of colour, character & worth EVERY centavo of the friendship we offer them!! ~ Grahame.
PS - I hope you two guys are going to keep your squables on to PM's from here on in - as others have so often been told, that is really where they belong!! GB.

It was great to see so many views and responses-and yes, it seems to be robby and scotty's show. I hope that they send me a postcard or some cash for initiating such a hugely interesting debate about car parts and paintings-it must be worth something in terms of therapy for them!

I will check out Santo Domingo and see about the art scene. I am pleased that others are sharing info about what and where to find art-yes it is obviously a very personal decision about what is "good" or "true" art.

I have my own ideas about that-which I will not bore you with.
Part of my interest is monetary and the other part is my interest and love for all things "really Dominican".

The country is full of wonderful people that seem to be able to smile at life while having so much less than what it costs me to stay for a week.
I enjoy seeing the colour and angst at the same time-
Not to go into semantics-but my original question still needs to be answered-
I have a number of great leads and even some emails of samples of art but have not heard if any one has been successful in importing Dominican art and been able to profit from it.

Thanks for the great reads-
